Cheating in piped gas in converting weight to vol
These days for having an uninterrupted utilities supplies gated communities are adopting the piped gas etc. Piped gas is by connecting the domestic gas cylinders to a gas cylinder bank and piping the gas to apartments. Each cylinder contains 14.2 kg of gas. However the piped gas is measured in cubic meters by the meter provided. Here is the chance of cheating by change of density for conversion of weight to volume as the meter does not do the same on its own. Density of LPG gas depends on the composition which is normally 60:40 of butane:propane, density of which varies from 2 kg/cu.m and above. This amounts to 7.1 cu.m of LPG when paid for one cylinder equivalent money. However with the variation in density the gated community administrators provide LPG gas in the range of 5 to 6 cu.m of gas per cylinder equivalent of gas of 14.2 kg. Is there any agency which can check and pinalise such corrupt unfair practice adopted by the administrators of such facilities. Here it may be noted that the Gated communities usually have moneyed people for them uninterrupted service is more important than the money they pay and so they dont care how much they are being cheated. more

members of the society can discuss with the gas supplier eg > IOCL or HP and work out . Ultimately the society keeps a record of number of cylinders consumed in a month , hence mass balance can be worked out . not a big deal more

Consumers can be duped by simply raising the temperature of the cylinders thereby lowering the density of the gas piped. more
