Child Safety Online - Addl Inputs

Below are the key issues, root causes and solutions for child safety online. Kindly review
and share any additional specific inputs you may have on the subject. We will soon be submitting a whitepaper to 4 key stakeholder ministries in Government of India to drive actions on the proposed solutions.

Child Safety Online - Key Solutions

1. Computers or tablets accessed by young children must be placed in the common area of the house on a desk
2. Parent should restrict the internet access of their children to only a couple of devices, which can then be easily monitored
3. Security software should be installed on the laptop/computer to limit the access of unwanted sites
4. Schools should take sessions with the children to make them understand cyber security and how to avoid being caught in the cyber-crime net
5. Schools should train parents on cyber safety and effectively tracking internet usage by children.
6. Stories and examples of different cybercrimes should also be shared with the children in these sessions
7. Parents should print the ‘internet do’s and don’ts’ on a paper and paste it next to their child’s computer at home
8. Every child MUST be informed of risks of chatting with strangers and releasing personal information on internet
9. Strict laws should be made for Cybercrime against children
10. Ministry of Communication and Information Technology should design specific guidelines for all cyber cafes to protect user information and to minimize cyber crimes
11. Cyber safety should be made a sub-department under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology
12. All online games should show an ‘age warning’ at the start of the game
13. Parents should not give access of their credit/debit cards to their children.

Child Safety Online - Key Root Causes

1. The access to internet has become very easy for children
2. Parents buy their kids latest gadgets like tablets, iPads, mobiles etc. without realizing that they could be misused against their child
3. Many parents, as well as teachers themselves, are not aware the extent of violations that are happening on the internet
4. Children are unaware of the do’s and don’ts on the internet
5. Working parents are not able to spend too much time with their children and there is no one to look over them most of the time
6. Many cyber criminals specifically target children, knowing that they are exposed
7. Cyber cafes do not care about the information safety of the user
8. Children are, a lot of times, overwhelmed by the information on the internet and are unable to decide what is right and wrong
9. Children have learned to emotionally blackmail their parent to get what they want
10. Lack of responsibility of School / Teacher in guiding children on proper use of Devices
11. Lack of any community awareness programmes on cyber crime
12. Parents mostly do not know how to block unwanted sites on the device operated by their child
13. Children, Parents, Teachers do not have any formal training on risks, do's, and don't
14. There is no owner in the country for the cause of cyber safety at central or state level.

Child Safety Online - Key Issues

1. Children get easy access to violent games online
2. They share too much personal information with strangers online
3. Teenagers get attracted towards pornography due to easy access on different devices connected to the internet
4. They fill a lot of personal information in forms on unsafe websites
5. Unsafe internet access leads to many cyber financial frauds
6. Children get exposed in cyber cafes as their systems have weak safety and firewall settings
7. There are many online rackets running which specifically target children
8. Cyberbullying is a major issue that children face
9. Games and sites misguide children and take authorizations to charge on credit cards
10. Children use their parent's credit/debit cards online without their permission

Child safety online is a myth....today's children, being alone in a nuclear family - are always on the lookout for a " Patient EAR " to hear about their own apprehensions and fear of the unknown. Earlier days - we had the ever present support system in the form of Grand parents, mamas, mamys etc flirting around a joint family home and the child could clear many a self doubts from them. In today's world - the kid is totally alone ..a) due to the non availability of the 'support system', b) due to peer pressure in school c) due to total lack of physical sports activity wherein the child could expend much of his/her tension build up in the system d) due to the total lack of time from even near friends, who are busy fighting their OWN battles at their homes..!!.. Essentially, THE CHILD IS ALL ALONE..!!.. In these circumstances, the child finds " solace " in his/her Electronic gadget only - be it the Mobile phone or the Lap top or the Computer at home or even the Tablet - which helps her/ him to get transport self into a make believe world thus exposing self to ANOTHER DANGER. I WISH THAT TODAY's PARENTS SPEND A SPECIFIC " QUALITY TIME " WITH THEIR KIDS EVERY DAY AND BE AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO HIM/HER SO THAT THE CHILD DOES NOT HAVE TO FALL BACK ON THE ELECTRONIC GADGETS FOR MORAL SUPPORT..!!.. more
First teach children good things . they will learn them soon compared to bad ones. It is easy when good things are imparted first. more
In short unless parents control their child with uncontrolled floating money eve gods dare not to stop the misuse of technology by the child . why a child need Hi-Fi mobile only for communication simple basic phone is enough.so parents should not provide Hi-Fi sets to satisfy their ego with co friends , Please have post paid billing mode for the child at least so that every month you will know what is the use. do not allow them to have the mobile 24 hours. they ca always carry 5 or 10 Rupees with them so that when in emergency they can pay 1 Rupee and use public phone or the school /college phone . more
