CLEANLINESS /FACILITIES -RAILWAY STATIONS

Much has been talked about cleanliness in railway stations and its premises.I have some observations to make. I have traveled length and breadth of most railway zones during last three years. I find that,

1. Efforts to keep Rly stations clean is going on in a mechanical manner
2. But premises of railway stations, parking areas are stuffed with taxis, autos, and their pestering agents and waste materials.
3.The toilets are generally in platform ONE and not in others
4. Old people have go up and down the stairs for going to toilets
5. There are no sitting arrangements on platforms except waiting rooms
6. platforms other than main one is littered with cargo, TTs boxes, petty shops
7, people sit on the dirty platform of concrete surrounding some pillars.
8. Drinking water taps are mostly broken not repaired.We do not know what kind of drinking water it is (some stns it is mentioned RO water).Petty shop fellow doesnt like free RO water facilities as it affects his bottled drinking water sale.
9.Fans work but are very few and no sitting arrangements under them
10. no escalator or slops to help old and disabled to reach other platforms. They have to do steps perennially.
11. many petty shops sell things above MRP rates even now.
12. smaller stations has less facility or no facility at all

THE ABOVE ARE MAINLY ABOUT RLY STATIONS IN NORTH, EAST AND CENTRAL INDIA.

STATIONS IN SOUTH AND WEST LIKE KERALA , TAMIL NADU, KARNATAKA, GUJRAT ARE IMPECCABLY CLEAN AS AIRPORTS, STAFF MOPING FLOORS EVEN AT 1 AM, FACILITIES TO SIT ON ROWS OF CHAIRS AT WATCH TV, DRINIKING WATER, FANS , RLY PREMISES CLEAN , NO BEGGARS NO CROWD LYING DOWN AT THEIR AMTS ON ENTRANCE OR OUTSIDE , TAXIS ARE AT THEIR BAY EARMARKED. examples ARE AHMEDABAD, RAJKOT,ERNAKULAM JUNCTION, COIMBATORE , BANGALORE CHENNAI, TRIVANDUM, KOLLAM,PALAKKAD,SALEM,MYSORE ETC.

ONE WONDERS WHETHER THESE SOUTH AND WEST ZONE STATIONS ARE UNDER SAME MINISTRY?

NORTH ZONE STATIONS EXHIBITS LEAST ATTENTION TO CLEANLINESS ; TO MENTION A FEW, ARE KOLKATA, BHUBANESWAR, VARANASI,ABU ROAD, KATPADI, JHANSI, AGRA , NEW DELHI, SARAI ROHILLA, ANAND VIHAR .TAXI FELLOWS AND DALALS PESTER YOU AND PICKPOCKETS AND BROKERS FOLLOW YOU EVERYWHERE. THEY STAND IN THE QUE TO GET TICKETS. NIZAMUDDIN STN AND DELHI STATION ARE STILL A BIT BETTER.

RAILWAY STATIONS NEED QUALITY CONTROL AND ACCREDITATION TO A CERTAIN STANDARD. DO NOT SUBSIDIZE TICKETS BUT GIVE FACILITIES . more

it's not the Ministry is different, it is the people of north east part of India , where cleanliness is untouchable subject, Check the trains of North east specially Bihar, Assam and UP, the train Coaches are red due to spitting of Pan, Gutka, Khaini & what not. It's not worth complaining alone to Ministry. I have seen 3 Muslim travellers cleaning their Legs on wash basin, spilling water all over, the whole coach became dirty, no one Cribs or complaint . Charity begins at home. more  
I strongly support points 2 and 4. One more interesting thing I noticed. the booking portal says, a common man is paying 47% for your travel. Where from this figure come. Even the cities in the southern part of the country are much cleaner than those in other parts, which indicates towards the nature of the general public. As rightly pointed out in the post, the railway stations largely do not indicate that much changes have come through since the present government came into being. The railway ministry has utterly failed in all fronts including security of the lives of the travelling passengers. However, we must acknowledge the fact that the efforts are on to improve the situation and majority of the stations are now cleaner than ever before, as well as, several stations have been equipped with lifts and escalators for convenience of the passengers. Probably, a period of 3 & half years to set right of the mess that took place in 70 years, is too short and we may require to wait at least for a decade to notice any visible changes & improvements. more  
Mindset of locals in south and western part of the nation is better. In other part, people do not mind a few thousands rupees worth of the public property to gain few tens of rupees. The mindset must undergo change. Workers in the western and southern part carry out their assigned jobs with least supervision and control. The same does not happen in other parts. this also needs to change. more
