Compensation for Flight Delay

The Government today clarified compensation for flight delays in India.

In case of cancellation, the airlines shall either provide alternate flight or provide compensation in addition to the full refund of air ticket. Additionally, the airline shall provide meals and refreshments to the passengers who have already reported for their original flight at the airport while waiting for the alternate flight.

II. In case of delay in flight, the airline is required to provide meals and refreshments, an alternate flight/full refund of ticket to the passenger or hotel accommodation (including transfers) depending on the total flight delay.

Airline shall not be obliged to compensate in cases where the cancellation & delay is caused by a force majeure event i.e. extraordinary circumstance(s) beyond the control of the airline. more

Weight is a contentious and a personal issue. Some people are overweight for various factors. This could be discriminatory. If someone is too large, they probably still have to book two seats anyway. besides, this will be a administrative issue and a matter for lot of debate and dissatisfaction. No airline will probably implement such a policy. Anyway planes actually carry a lot of weight in terms of baggage and fuel. A passengers weight is not so significant to the overall scheme of things. more
I thought we already had such rules for ages. Probably they were never being implemented. There must be a better mechanism to report, monitor and administer such cases. Cancellation and delays in flights should be mandatory, not through optional insurance covers. more
This is a welcome decision. This will force the airlines to work efficiently or pay for laxity. more
In addition to this, there should be variable fare as per weight of the passengers, if any person obese and overweight then the passenger should be charged more and rebate to normal or below normal weight passengers to be compensated. more
Tell me, from where can we show this new rule to the airline if we are in a situation ? more
