‘Consumer Protection Bill, 2018’

It is heartening to note that the ‘Consumer Protection Bill, 2018’ has been recently introduced in Parliament. The Bill has provisions for establishing a Consumer Protection Authority to investigate consumer protection issues, pass orders for recall of goods and against misleading advertisements and other unfair trade practices.

The bill has enabling provisions for consumers to file complaints electronically and provision of “Mediation” as an Alternate Dispute Resolution Mechanism. It is felt that the present Bill is a step in the right direction and will help in fast disposal of complaints.

District forum in Hyderabad, Telegana did not put up case dates on the CONFONET in March 2018. I checked a few times and the date against my case was of Feb.Suddenly, I rec'd an SMS on the morning of the hearing date. I was out of town and asked my friend to rush to the court/forum. He did. The opposite Adv was to present arguments but the Adv although present, asked for adjournment. It was instantly given. My complaint is 1 yr old and at this rate 3 or 4 yrs will go by. Can we not streamline the system by calling on bench senior citizens , who have worked in responsible positions?? The consumer redressal sysyem needs drastic changes. Hope these come early. Arbitration clause would not be in the interests of the general public. Discretion is the root cause of disputes. If there are problems in the working of the Govt., they are because of discretion. If a complainant is certain of his complaint, why should there be arbitration? Arbitration leads to manipulations, bargaining, and the like. The rigidity of rules makes arbitration a farce. more
It looks to be good, but the business community through their lawyers will find loop holes and try to take advantage. more
Once the Bill is passed we should see it is executed/implemented properly. Our responsibility starts then. more
good start for consumer protection more
