Convert some engg.colleges in T N to arts colleges

It causes concern to see young plus two passed students , even with more than 85% aggregate marks , running from pillar to post to get admission in the subject of their choice in arts and science colleges in Tamil Nadu. Students from middle and upper income group unquestioningly and helplessly pay the exhorbitant fees demanded by self financing colleges to get admission. However, students from poor families are left high and dry leading to high level of frustration.

At the same time, there are more than 500 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu and there are polytechnics which are much more in number. In the engineering colleges, every year more than one lakh seats remain unfilled and amongst the passed out students , hardly 40% get appropriate jobs. The others remain under employed or unemployed for considerable period.

Why not convert atleast 200 engineering colleges and polytechnics in Tamil Nadu to arts and science colleges this academic year itself?

This would make seats available for aspiring plus two students in arts and science subjects, bring down the high fees demanded by the self financing colleges and also several engineering colleges which have very low level of students joining and are on the verge of closure will become more productive.

In Engg science new areas are in each discipline .reason for decline in admission is due to the fact academic institution is not updating circulm as per emerging areas and technology development happening in industry and in social. Unless students are having skill sets in new areas avenues will be limited. So Engg college need to strive for global standards to be relevant in this info age more
Good suggestion. But, the few points came to my mind I wish to share. 1. With huge infra development (investment) will the owners of these colleges accept ? 2. The need of the day is more technical people. As suggested by some of the members converting these colleges to Industrial Training Institutes/Polytechnics. would be a welcome move. 3. The real owners expectation about fees etc have to be compensated to them by Government? Will they do? 4. This (ITIs/Polytechnics)) will certainly be useful for rural students, proper guidance should be given to prepare students to take up technical subjects such as Automobile engineering (Diploma) etc 5. Instead of abruptly closing these institutions this will help the management. 6. What about the fate of the HODs, Professors and Lecturers who are presently working. Will they be given alternative employments in other Engineering classes, after obtaining their options to serve Government colleges or Polytechnics. 7. Will the present day students opt to join theses ITIs and Polytechnics. ? Generally the seats are not filled up there also in the existing such Polytechnics/ITIs. 8. Closing of institutions to be avoided as far as possible.Government must think about this and do some alternative arrangements. more
All technical institutes should also have a department teaching arts and sciences. The IITs also offer post-graduate courses in sciences and in humanities offering degrees in Personnel management, HRD, Industrial Management. So engineering institutes can be permitted to do the same. L.Kalavathi Retd. Bank Official Chennai, Tamilnadu, India 29/05/2017 more
The students coming out of many private politician owned engineering colleges as per the data cum report are not employable. This causes huge waste of money, time & youth. Private colleges where in placements thro' campus is less than 40% of the total strength be cancelled by an order, such institutions be taken over by Govt for 1) Arts & science college 2)Govt. aided medical colleges. The govt. pay compensation for each on the Govt. guide lines rate in that locality on the foundation laid year. The teachers, lecturers, professors be allowed to write an eligible test based on which absorbed in regular roll irrespective of the age now. 50% of the polytechnics be converted as ITI model employment training skill institutions. more
