Corruption in Customs
I am surprised to read through the posts by most of the members baring a few! No body is pinpointing the corruptions prevailing in customs departments. Can we not stick to the subject of discussion only?
Being in the shipping industry for more than 20 years, I am finding it difficult from where to start!! I personally tried in the year 2000 to stop giving so called 'speed money' to customs people which they collect from each and every one - be it export or import clearance (we were named as Y2K means those who don't pay the bribe). There is an estimated 100 crores of cash transactions happens every day only at Nhava Sheva area!! All the postings of customs officers are against some fixed amount which varies from a lakh of rupees to few lakhs of rupees and the commissions goes upto the highest levels in Delhi. Now the officers who have taken the posting against money will recover their money within their tenure. I agree with Dr. Mahadevan Iyer - its a lost case and would also challenge this forum to stop this nexus! I will be instrumental if you desire to eradicate the corruption from customs. I have mentioned many a times in many discussions that the key problem in India is CORRUPTION and surprisingly it has been thrown to a back seat after the election by the BJP Govt contrary to their promise of a corruption free India before the election. Don't pretend to be different - do it and it will show.
You go to any customs house / CFS, you will find the proof of corruption every where and they think it is their rights!! Every department in customs are corrupt - be it CIU, DRI, SIIB. There has been instances of dire consequences to Additional Commissioner level officer as he was not corrupt - eventually he resigned. How many examples this forum need? Officially there is only few hundred rupees expenses as per receipt for clearance but ask any exporter / importer how much they end up paying. If this forum is really want to act - let the ministry form a citizen team with HONEST industry experts to report every case of corruption and terminate the corrupt officers against those reports if found authentic without lingering the matter. more

In Modi's regime, nothing is changed as far as corruption is concerned. Ask people about DDA more

Corruption in Customs is most horrible and their moral is boosted by 70 years of Filthy Governance in the Country where in Politicians keep ranting -HUM Garb Desh Hai ,Hamara desh Garib hai ,Humko Garibo ke lia bahut kuch kerna baki hai ( Mr Modi is the only PM I have observed who never projects his mother land in such a horrible state but Italians did) I do not know about Customs in Shipping but my observation in Airport for last 34 years say five years back when I was in service I used to see these suited booted well paid Custom guys are as good as beggars in the street .They keep begging exorbitant amount on custom goods with make believe calculation and then bargain saying OK you give this much then .There should be clear cut Chart in Airport Customs for passengers to know the norms of Customs and type and amount of payment to be made if they posses goods which attract Custom payment so that Custom people do not act like beggars in their White dress and passengers just know by themselves how much they have to pay.Modi Govt should crack down on these filth in most stern manner so that they do not become pain in the ass and project a friendly atmosphere in Custom Clearence. more

I know a custom clearing agent, who in short span of time, very flourishing business, who were riding scooter now in many imported cars more

PMO should take cognizance of this open corruption. Ministry concerned should be held responsible for this large scale corruption. more

Its a really pathetic situation in the country... as corruption is eating away the progress of country as a deep rooted pest... we all need to stand up to fight this menace to bring much more laurels for the country.... I think the biggest menace is Police, as once Police can be made reasonably clean, all other things will fall is place, as all will need to follow law and abide by it too Lets take up the issue of fighting Police corruption with utmost urgency Thanks more
