Corruption in State Electricity Depts - Inputs Sought
With this post we would like to seek your inputs on the various ways in which corruption is practiced in the various State Electricity Depts. Kindly share based on your experiences how exactly the department engages in corrupt practices/citizen harassment.
The objective of this exercise is to understand the issues in detail and then discuss causes/solutions seperately to propose something to the State Administration that addresses this gap.

All government power stations should be privatized and EB should buy distribute and sell electricity commercially. EB should give the government dividends and out of this All subsidies in electricity costs should be deposited directly in beneficiaries bank a/c like done for Gas. Parallel licences should also be given to private sector to compete with EB similar to what was done in Telecommunication and Air transport sectores more

Whenevery there is an opportunity government staffs (not all) are utilizing it very well in getting the money from the public. One such incident is, recently in Chennai, electricity board is replacing all the old electronic meters with digital meters to improve the efficiency of the EB to take the meter-reading sitting in the office rather than coming to home and taking the reading manually, but the person who came to install/replace the meters demanding Rs. 100 for every meter change. Think of the corruption value involved in it, Rs. 100 x number of connections in that area. Second type: Whenevery we complain of any fault, they will come and repair it and expect a minimum of Rs. 50 from us, otherwise next time when we call for any fault service, they are avoiding to attend the service saying that work has to be done by the local Electrician they wont do it. more

The problem of state electricity board is all together different.No doubt ther is a large scale corruption,but still there are some good persons.The problem is there is no recognition of such person either by the department or by the society.There is shortage of staff and the Govt, is not filling the vacant posts.The entire engineering department is working as collection agent and there is no time and attention towards basic duties e.g. upgradation of system,development of new infrastucture,maintenance of network,s/s,releasing of new connection etc.The corruption can be minimised by making the entire business process on line.All the meter reading of high valued consumers should be taken through AMR.We should provide RF meters to all other consumers so that meter reader should not enter the house of any one.The Electricity Forum / Ombudsman and vigilence cell should be strengthened and should take stren action against deliquent officer/official. more

I am talking about the state of Jharkhand where the authorities are charging hefty amount for putting up electric poles,cables and everythings,if a transformer gets un-serviceable then they will delay the process of repairing it asking for the amount as per their demands,Really I worry about the future of our country what will be the situation after say five years,they might start asking for the roads and other amenities,govt is simply making announcements in the news papers that tough action will be taken but that is a drama to make the public fool. The agenda for daily meeting is whether the collection target was achieved on the previous day Any repair of minor nature is to borne by the line men in every area For new connection one have to pay, otherwise it will not be given. Every contractor is to pay for, while submitting the tender, % of the contract value after the award Fuse of call the consumer is to pay No maintenance or checking of transmission lines, fuse carriers at the post unless one pay for it Power theft is not prevented by taking money Reason, the employees pay for getting the job, For unskilled 2 lacs, supervisor 7 lacs, Executives 15lacs are the rate. So once got employed the motto is to collect as early as possible.And it become practice. Corruption is only because of the politician. Rather than asking for suggestion to prevent corruption in various departments, focus on to eliminate corruption in politics and politicians, bureaucrats. Rest will fall in line more
