Cost of medicine

1.Medical stores run by Co operative Society gives 10% rebate on the MRP. Few shops are also gives rebate varying from 5 to 10% for regular customers. This means the profit margin for the drug is so high. They also give some cut to the doctors who prescribe medicine available with them.
2. The cost of same medicine differs from company to company. For example "Atorvastatin" tabs for cholesterol cost for 10 tablets is Rs 20/- in one co (ATCHOL- Brand name) and Rs 60/- from the co UTV. This means the profit margin is so high or compromising on the quality. Consumer has no knowledge.
3. Few companies supplying to the PSU's print on the wrapper that it is for the supply to PSU. Why such stamping. I guess that batch with inferior quality shall not be get mixed with other consignments.
4. Now a days physician prescribes minimum of 4 to 5 varieties of tablets to any patient, whether it is required or not. No ethics followed by physicians, though MCI has code of conduct. It is like taking oath in the judicial proceedings by everyone for not following it. more

Mahesh grievances are well understood and appreciated. When patients are asked to undergo, tests they do it, because they are in distress to get their near ones get well. Anyone sees their kith and kin even with drips they fear. So they simply ak what they were asked to undergo. Physicians courteous with patients makes themhalf cure before administering medicine. Today to become a medical professional thro a private medical college costs minimum one crore. All those who pursue in private is not from the same professional family, but people who can afford (by any means) So the priority will be to earn money multifold. I suggest as a professional you can join together to weed out the quakes. If you professionals cannot do it, how a common man can do it.I fully agree that professional who do service get affected by bad elements more
The name of the app referred to by Prabhat Jha ji is Healthkart. Its a free android app download from the Google play store. Pretty useful. I suggest stick to the better known brands. more
Doctors should remain professional. There should be a separation of personal & professional business. That is part & parcel of medical ethics. Since, the rest of the common population considers and treats healthcare as service sector industry and the government treats the medical profession as such without giving it recognition as an industry, these points will continue. The problem is that I do not mind if people make comments about my profession with information & facts at hand. All the common people have started behaving as if they know medicine. There is no accountability for quacks although they are illegal. They get support from people & politicians. If you have the habit of watching youtube, please watch it daily. There is atleast one incident in this country every week where doctors are abused by patients and politicians alike as if we are guarantors of life. All the information & statistics are available on the internet. There is no doctor who is censoring the information about the medical profession anywhere in the world. I request that people go through the information and compare the statistics and understand where the problem lies. HOW ARE DOCTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES & DIAGNOSTIC CENTRES DO? HOW MANY PATIENTS ACTUALLY VERIFY WHETHER THE DIAGNOSTIC CENTRE IS RUN BY A QUALIFIED DOCTOR OR NOT? WHY DON'T THEY ASK THE SAME QUESTIONS OF QUACKS, AYURVEDIC PHYSICIANS OR HOMEOPATHIC DOCTORS? AND BY THE WAY, WHEN ANY CASE DETERIORATES UNDER THE CARE OF THESE OTHER BRANCHES, THEY ARE REFERRRED TO ALLOPATHS TO FACE THE BRUNT AND DO THE HARD WORK. I HAVE QUIT PRACTICE SINCE 4 MONTHS AS A RESULT OF UNEDUCATED OR EDUCATED FOOLS SITTING ON JUDGEMENT ON MY COMPETENCE. MOST OF THESE PEOPLE CANNOT EVEN SWEAR AN OATH BEFORE GOD THAT THEY GOT THEIR DEGREES WITHOUT USING ILLEGITIMATE MEANS. more
Thank you Dr. Mahesh Docherla for your comments in capital letters. I also come from a family of Physician - my father, grand father and great grandfather are physicians. As a child, I found those old fashioned Physicians attending to any distress call from patients day & night without bothering for personal convenience/inconveniences. They believed in the oath taken by them to serve their patients while choosing their profession. Alas, that devotion is not valued by physicians on date. Many of them primarily believe that medical profession is no different from other professions. They believe that patient physician relationship is nothing but a professional one - entirely governed by demand/supply situation. They do not hesitate to join the manipulation games played by Pharmaceutical companies,Hospital Management businessmen and Medical Shops/Diagnostic companies owners. Who am I to say anything against their professionalism?? more
