CRIMINAL WASTE OF PRECIOUS CAUVERY WATER

For over two years, politicians and fringe groups in Tamil Nadu have been accusing Karnataka government and Modi government for not letting Cauvery water for irrigation in delta region in Tamil Nadu.

The so called farmers’ representatives protested in variety of ways , and went to Delhi half dressed or quarter dressed and eating dead rats etc.

Now, Cauvery water has plentifully come to Tamil Nadu and due to lack of storage capacity, Cauvery water is being let into the sea.

Mettur Dam capacity has been reduced by more than 20% due to silt accumulation and lack of desilting operations for several years. Veeranam lake which is one of the largest lakes in Tamil Nadu has not been desilted adequately and now has only around 75 to 80% of it’s storage capacity due to silt accumulation.

The repeated appeal of the farmers or knowledgeable people in Tamil Nadu to link Vaigai and Cauvery river and construct check dams to store water have fallen in deaf years for several years now.

I have sent appeals to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister six months back to allow anyone to do desilting operations in the lakes and tanks and take away the sand and silt free of charge for use. I did not get any acknowledgement. My articles on the subject were also published in several newspapers and journals. What can an individual do beyond this ?

Now, with the precious Cauvery water going into see , Tamil Nadu Chief Minister has announced that he would constitute a committee to examine as to how to store the surplus Cauvery water and prevent it’s loss. He said the committee would submit the report in six months.

What a sad scenario in Tamil Nadu where nobody seems to be accountable for the loss of precious Cauvery water.

In all probability, after six months from now, Tamil Nadu politicians and so called farmers’ representative would be protesting due to drought conditions in the delta region and non availability of Cauvery water. At that time, no politician or so called farmers’ representatives would talk about the Cauvery water wasted now.

If the standards of politicians and governance would be as low as this in Tamil Nadu , who can help this state ?

Yes Sir, your appeals to CM or to the Government officials will fall on deaf ears because politicians in TN who influence people as if they are pied piper's mice are adamant and people are not able to think what is good for them. Without going into the changed situations in the present times they are still wanting to fight for Cauvery water. None of the Governments in the past 40 years in the State have taken any remedial action to build resources. Recently I had chance to visit Ramanathapuram areas and across the full streatch the lands were parched with no agriculture and no farm lands. I do not know the reason for this, but if no cultivation is possbile can't the Government think of Solar Farms so that energy can be produced?. TN politicians are only interested in inaugurating some shops or flyovers. That is why we must have a Government which can govern and not like the movies, to show pictures. more
Sir, your point  is very correct. If we develop  our own  water sources there is no need to  stretch  our  hands  towards Karnataka..According to    retired irrigation engineers we have plenty of  water  sources.  But who cares about it?  Now cauvery water silences all  protests.. We have totally forgotten  a concept of ,Save  a penny, Earn a penny. .  On Wednesday, 1 August, 2018, 10:20:32 AM GMT-7, N. S. Venkataraman wrote: more

Tamil Nadu is doomed, with the kind of politicians we have. Time and again, it has been amply demonstrated that the issue of water "scarcity" in Tamil Nadu can be solved with simple solutions, if only these politicians show the sense to implement them methodically, instead of populist breast beating! more
Yes. You are 100% right. Some people in the name of farmers went to Delhi and tarnished the image of all tamilians by holding dead rats in mouth and drinking urine and rolling naked on roads. If they are truely concerned for farmers welfare, they should now come out and protest against the wasteful discharge of water into sea. We have let out water wastefully more than the quantity awared for the whole season by the cauvery tribunal. The so called farmer leaders are puppets in the hands of politicians. more
