Criminalisation of Indian Politics

Recently one of the leading English Dailies published the statistic pertaining to the criminal cases being faced by the sitting legislators of Madya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha which has given a glimpse of what is the reality of the political scenario of the Indian electoral system. As per the statistic, out of the total 230 sitting MLAs 94 of them have criminal cases filed against them with 47 of them face serious charges which forms 41% and 21% respectively. A look at the Lok Sabha of the Indian Parliament also shows that out of the 539 winners 233 have declared criminal cases against them which shows an increase of 44% in the number of members of parliament with declared criminal cases since 2009. An interesting and at the same time shocking finding of the Lok Sabha election is that the chances of winning for a candidate with declared criminal cases in the Lok Sabha 2019 is 15.5 per cent whereas for a candidate with a clean background, it is 4.7 per cent. It is most unfortunate that in spite of his past background when a contestant’s nomination as a candidate in the election process is accepted after scrutiny of his application by the Election Commission, his legitimacy to stand in the election is established because there is no law prevailing to debar them from contesting.

We, as citizens of India have our duties and responsibilities of casting our vote without fail and electing our representatives who possess the qualities of honesty, integrity, compassion, confidence and flexibility who also will make it a point of responsibility to develop and make life better for people in their units, wards, constituencies, states and regions-we will definitely have a great country. Many attempts in the past have failed. Will the future hold good?

Ours is a country where anyone can file a criminal case on anyone else. Or at least that will be the justification given for accepting a nomination. Even Mr LK Advani had criminal cases against him all the time. Only those convicted will be considered as criminals and I am sure election commission has sufficient grounds not to accept their nomination. And since in our courts criminal cases can drag on for decades, a verdict may never be reached. In the meanwhile, intimidation (or even murder) of witnesses will make sure that conviction is next to impossible. more
Moral Conduct and Non Criminal Candidature MUST BE PRIME Condition more
This is very Important point. seeing over all Scenario It is time, people to take active part. Everybody have to under stand nationalist and anti national from Panchayat to Assembly. Who is working against nation. If we neglect this then future is dark. We have to put pressure on asl parties and give indication that we will not vote to criminals. but voting should be considering national interest more
Requirement for a candidate to contest election should be atleast equivalent to a Senior Level officer of a Govt/Private company. more
As long as money, caste and religion play a role in politics , there is no cure for this. For this we have to wait for the voters to be educated properly. more
It is said that voting to those criminals and getting elected is root cause of criminalisation of indian politics. This is partly correct. But it is also fault on the part of GOI/ECI to allow those who indulge in criminal activities to contest in the election. If a politician is booked and FIR is filed on him he must be made ineligible to contest in the Assembly or Parliament posts. No matter what crime he has committed and when this is important matter, it is needless to say that he should be barred from contesting when he/she is arrested for rape/molestation and murder cases. The GOI must amend the ECI rules in this session itself. more
