Current Model of Electoral Funding - Inputs on Issues
Dear Friends,
Thanks for all the inputs so far on the various priorities/subjects.
Fighting elections in India is expensive and as it stands we do not have a well organized and transparent system for raising electoral funding. This also has a bearing on the Corruption experienced by Citizens.
Through this discussion, let us highlight all the issues with current system of Electoral Funding. Once we have done that, we will identify Root Causes and Develop Solutions through a separate post.
The end objective is to present collective solutions from Citizens for a transparent system of Electoral Funding to the Government and CEC for implementation.

The Limit on the amount that can be spent by a candidate should either be dispensed with or fixed at a fairly high level so that there is no need for a candidate to spend the unaccounted money. The EC should monitor the spend and ensure that entire money spent is accounted for. No anonymous donations by to political parties should be accepted. The source of funds should be scrutinized and expenditure audited to ensure that tax paid legal money is spent on elections. more

Why should the fighting of elections be expensive? The candidate, if he is genuinely in the public service, should be well-known to the locals. At the time of elections he can place simple advertisements on what he has done so far, what he proposes to do if elected, his credentials etc. He should address public briefly either on stage or on air for about 15 minutes. That's all. What is the need of processions, countless public meetings, false door-to-door canvassing etc.? In this way, minimum expenditures are incurred. Too much money spending does not serve any purpose. more
