Decide on Delhi assembly's fate within 4 weeks, SC tells Centre

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the lieutenant governor of Delhi to either dissolve the assembly or put a popular government within four weeks.

"One party says it does not want to form government. Other says it cannot. Third party has no strength. In a situation like this why should people suffer?" the bench asked.

A five-judge Constitution Bench headed by Justice H L Dattu also asked why MLAs should be paid from the taxpayers' money for sitting idle due to assembly kept in suspended animation.

"Why should tax payers money be paid to legislators who are not doing anything? Authority concerned should think and act," the bench also comprising justices J Chelameswar, A K Sikri, R K Agrawal and Arun Mishra said.

It asked the Centre what steps it has taken to explore the possibility of government formation during the last five months. more

U5 pressure on BJP to form Government like they did for AAP. They cannot run away from the responsibility. In case they are not able to take responsibility, they should go to the voters and request for a fresh mandate. The delay in polling will result in decline in BJP's popularity. more
