DEMAND for BETTER SEWER NETWORK

Organized by N.G.O. calling citizens , administrators for a meeting and Pannell discussion . It was really worthwhile attending . The NGO had done a lot of home work with the help of interested, retired specialists .
The main objective was to regulate the sewage generated by the public as well as the factories. As of now they are being le into the existing river systems in Chennai , which have turned sewage channels . Besides that , the 46,000 Lakes and its surroundings around the city is being used as Garbage dumping places . And the Pumping stations and treatment plants are also situated close to these Water bodies. The ill effect on the Water bodies can well be imagined.
There is a great challenge for the Administrators :
* The same system of sewage clearance is followed from 1921 . What was the population then , and the life style and the quality of food consumed to that of the present scenario , particularly the quantity generated to the chemicals that are added to the sewage . The present population of Greater chennai is 75 Million [7.5 crores]
* The new requirement of the increased treatment plants and increased locational paces for treatment Plants .The centralized system should be replaced by locational installation of Treatment Plants in the city .
* Co operation from the citizens and participation in the welfare of the city and their own surroundings .
* A specialist also suggested an account of the rainfall as to how it is being utilized . For example the 59 cm of rain in December 16 ,that lead to the Deluge in Chennai is almost 150 T.M.C. [thousand million cubic feet ] 75 % of what we are demanding from Karnataka to in Kaveri for the use for agriculture and other purposes. The major portion of the water went into the sea and inundated the housing colonies .
HOPE THE GOVERNMENTS IN THE STATE AND IN CENTER GIVE THEIR THOUGHTS TO SOLVE THIS VERY VEXING PROBLEMS OF THE CITY DWELLERS . THE PLAN HAS TO BE IN MANY OTHER CITIES ALSO . SHOULD WE DEPEND ONLY ON N.G.O’S FOR OUR REFUGE ? more

Sir, both Central and State Governments will work only when an NGO or NASA says there is gold or platinum buried under the sewage canal. I vaguely remember, a few years back Government officials sincerely got into the act of digging for king's wealth (gold) in a place somewhere in North India ( not very sure of the location) based on an astrologer's word. Some one can correct me if im wrong. Though it turned out to be nothing at the end but it gave a message that Government officials can also work.......... if lured.. Year after year these rodents go abroad in the pretext of studying management of sewerage systems in the foreign countries.... Their merry trip is always made out of Tax payers' hard earned money and as usual with zero accountability. Kashmir to Kanyakumari only crooks rule us and in almost all the cities sewage canals invariably run in the heart of the cities. Cooum in Chennai, have read that till the early twentieth century, it was a clean river, most suitable for navigation and British used to ferry agriculture products along with Buckingham canal. But today its a well known stinking landmark in Chennai.. I think even 2004 Tsunami failed to clean it. Its unlikely any Government will provide a permanent solution, only the people have to join together to make the environment in a livable state. more
I remember that incident very well and you ae right in northern India near an ancient temple . Money and wealth is wealth no doubt . But the
responsible Government agencies should have thought sensibly and taken a seismogram or any other suitable investigation before going in for Digging operationwith elaborate security .

In this meeting held this Sunday an expert had quoted another experts opinion that the current sewage system hasn't changed from the year 1921 when the British built.

Don't we have minds to think beyond what is done a Century ago or want to turn deaf ears. more
First all should start cleaning and treating all waste at home and buildings and dispose it properly more
Segregation of waste should start at home . In our small flats we do it . Plastic and ther separate after Corporation sent a notice to do it. It is nor being able to follow as the situation in the state demands their entire attention elsewhere. more
It is not properly being done. In Madurai West the old drainage is replaced by new one. All the street roads are damaged for relaying drainage pipelines three years back. Still the roads are not relayed. Roads are in bad conditions. Administration and elected members and their party contractors are corrupt without spending the contracted amount fully. They share some percentage of people's tax money in the contract work by themselves. Then how the work will be good quality to last long? more
Better sewage network? The layout into which i moved in during 2011, but in existence for more than 35 years is yet to get any sewage network. Though a lot of money was ""SPENT"" creating a pipe line (read between the "" "" to understand for whose benefit it was SPENT! MY ONLY SUGGESTION HERE IS : GET ALL THE GOVT PROPERTY IN GREENWAYS ROAD VACATED. ASK ALL 'RESPONSIBLE POWERFULL' ""CITIZENS"" THERE TO MOVE THE RESIDENCES TO NOOK AND CORNERS OF THE CITY. AUTOMATICALLY god WILL WORK EVERYWHERE RECTIFIYNG ALL our SUCH ISSUES! Greenways road can be used to create more multistoried housing units for the poor as the area there is HH UU GG EE more
Well said Daniel! But how are we going to implement? Another example is Puzhuthivakkam lake in Balaiah garden, Madipakkam. Beside the Rajah street is the lake. This feeds the underground water river and used by general public using bore. This is lake is misused as follows. 1. Used as toilet (I have photos of defecating persons) 2. As many as 10 Buffaloes always lying in the lake urinating and defecating. When water level is low cows and calf are tied here doing the same. 3. I have requested some throwing the Thithi material (food, flower, leaves offered to dead persons) into the lake, not to do so. In age old days, priests would have asked people throw perishable things into river which was the only drainage to the sea. 4.Who is the Rajah of the Rajah street? Anybody having a 10x10 feet office with a party flag. He occupies one lane(half street) for parking construction equipment and vehicles. All the cleaning is done in the lake. 5.There are rented workshop in a house which deposit the poisonous weld and paint waste and occupy another half of the road. Welding power factor is high and cannot be used in domestic line. EB fined around Rs.50,000 in an Industry for using office power line for welding in an industry in Trichy. 6.All the oil and waste of water washing of vehicles overflows into the lake, from the next shop. 7. Illegal fishermen leave the net with fish(now dead) which stinks Is there a department of environment / water and drainage board in Chennai? Have the officials got up from the seat except for getting the salary?? Who overlooks them??? more
In that area the people are very active to protect the lakes . Chennai is supposed to have had 42,000 Lakes. Where are they all , probably being used as mentioned by you .
