Demand safer cars, consumers

India does not adhere to UN’s minimum crash test standards for cars. As a result car makers take consumers for a ride and provide higher safety features only in high end luxury cars. Consumers have to defy the notion that airbags, ABS and other safety equipments are a luxury component and demand for safer cars. “RIGHT TO SAFETY” is the first Consumer Right. We need to fully understand this right and demand safer products, say Sakshi Hallan (Eco (H)-2nd yr, IP College for Women-DU) and Abhishek Kumar (Eco (H)-2nd yr, Hans Raj College-DU), who have come up with a detailed study titled ‘How Safe are Our Cars?’ during recent Internship with Consumers India. Ask for roads as per USA specification but not as built in NJ and NY city. The roads are all broken up, potholed and car breaking. more
Yes, why not? We must ask for these in addition to safer cars! more
Thanks Madam for highlighting this important issue of safety in Indian cars and bringing research of DU students and motivating them in this regard. Implementation of National Auto Fuel Policy 2003 BS IV fuel quality standards and vehicle emission for 4 wheeler in 13 cities and BS III in all cities (2010) are not sufficient for India. The proposed road map envisaging BS IV across the country by 2017 in a phased manner and BS VI by 2024 is also too slow a process for India, a leading manufacturer of car, looking for increased share of export market for small and mid car in world market. Features like advanced Anti-lock braking system (ABS), front and rear fog lamps, Anti-pinch power windows, Dual frontal, side chest and side head airbags (curtains), Anti-lock brakes (ABS), Electronic brake distribution (EBD) and Electronic stability control (ESC), Advanced seat belt reminders etc. and BS VI are to be evaluated for small and mid cars also except for entry level cars for implementation within next 3 years by the industry. Initially govt. may like to give some subsidy to manufacturers implementing these safety and pollution norms/features till study is completed and implementation is forced on industry to advance the implementation dates. more
Can we demand SAFER DRIVERS, roads as per USA specification, very dedicated police force instead of Cars? more
