Designing cities for floods
Modern cities have adopted our concept of Taalab or Ponds to reduce the water logging during monsoon. Instead of increasing the size / water carrying capacity of the drain pipes for the entire city, they have created where possible a lake or Taalab for every community. These modern day Taalab are called 'Water Retention Basin'. Every storm water drain goes to this basin first and then a Huge pipe takes this water to the water treatment plant from this basin. Thereby, the smaller pipes are never overloaded (the main reason for water logging).
If land availability is not a problem then over-ground Taalabs are created otherwise the Water Retention Basins are created under-ground.
Taalab has many advantages other than reducing water logging. It helps ground water table thereby increasing water level in irrigation wells and drinking water wells. Also reduces heat in the atmosphere, helps birds and other creatures.
Lake side properties are in high demand and hence the lake-side development creates win-win-win situation for the Taxpayer, City/local govt and for the environment.
The whole development could include recreational activities in the lake like paddle boating, rafting etc. The trails in the wooded area around the lake could create additional charm. Could add some sport fields also to the park depending upon available land.
City of Montreal, Canada has solved the water-logging problem on their busy roads/highways with these Basins. I have been working for City of Montreal for over 25 years. more

Yerragunta Sir,What i suggest for Hussain Sagar lake as it Indicates is initiated by some Mughal King or Nawab but now its time of Science and Technology.See In Hot Temperature Area the Phenomenon of TALAAB & PONDS are successful if you see where the Temperature Touches 45-50 Degree Centigrade in Central India or North West part of India like at Rajsthan,Gujarat,MP,UP,Delhi,Punjab,Harayana etc. and there the Still water get evaporated during Hot Summer Time.See Ground Water Lvl in these areas are very very Deep. In southern Part of India it will be much Better to have Canal type Running water system instead of STILL water System. more

Thanks for your idea.your experience is useful for us. Kindly analyse the content of our Indian talabs(tanks)and tell us whether only storm water drains in to it or all sewerageflows in to it,thus it is a cesspool.contamination of ground water ,mosquitto breading ,death of aquatic plants and fish and foul odour emanating from it . How can you compare Indian lakes to Canadian lakes.The very purity is not maintained .water analysis shows that all components are are at a higher level than permissible. Hence your idea of connecting storm water may decompress road side flood but how will you cure your cesspool so in India. Hyderabad Hussain sagar lake 400 year old is not being touched by any body even international companies .The government of this state are in need of experts and waiting for suggestions,Jaihind more
