You may have heard of the phrase ‘You are what you eat’ and a little experimentation may have made you realize how true it is. A good percentage of our health problems is the result of our faulty eating (and lifestyle) habits. Thankfully, a little change of things can sort it all out.
Diabetic patients are often advised to pay extra attention to their diets, and yet, sometimes, we seem to miss out without even realizing it. Here we’ve put down the 5 worst foods you must avoid if you suffer from diabetes. Read on.
Rice: White rice is a dietary staple for us Indians. However, a study conducted by Harvard School of Public Health shows that people who eat white rice daily, two times a day are more at the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Instead, opt for brown rice which is similar to white rice, but retains the husk, bran and germ.
High Sodium Foods: High sodium foods such as fried chips, salted biscuits, pastas with dressings, Chinese takeaways etc are the worst foods for a diabetic patient. You may not suffer from blood pressure problems, but consuming high sodium foods could spell bad news for your blood glucose levels too.
Soft Drinks: Soft drinks are probably the worst you could choose for yourself if you are a diabetic patient. These tempting fizzy drinks are nothing but sugary water. They instantly spike up the blood sugar to dangerous (yes dangerous) levels. Consuming these drinks will not just add calories and carbs, but also affect your weight control plans. Instead, choose artificial sweeteners (in moderation) or natural sweeteners like honey, cinnamon and fresh fruits.
Processed Meats: Processed meats, too, are nothing but a sodium overdose. A typical packed lunch from your local restaurant or a fast food stall contains around 600 milligrams of sodium in just one serving! Swap the cured, processed meats for fresh, lean meats; and try to whip up quick low-fat, low-sodium rotis, sandwiches and meat dishes yourself.
Coffee: You may be resisting alcohol and those fizzy soft drinks, but going weak in the knees when it comes to coffee. While coffee itself is good for the heart, a typical coffee drink from the nearby café can be a bad news for you as a diabetic patient.
Most coffees available in popular cafes pack in exorbitant amounts of saturated fats, cholesterol, carbohydrates and sugar and all of them spell the worst for diabetics. Instead, prepare a cup of coffee yourself using low fat milk and artificial sweetener. more
