NEW DELHI: The railways will install about one lakh digital display screens across more than 2,000 stations to disseminate passenger-related information.

RailTel, a PSU of railways, has been given the task of developing the Railway Display Network (RDN) under which around 1,00,000 digital display screens will be put up at over 2,000 railway stations, said a senior rail ministry official.

The RDN plan will be implemented on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad and Allahabad-Manikpur sections on a trial basis, the official said.

RDN is primarily meant for displaying information related to passenger amenities, comfort, convenience and safety. All display screens, which are to be IP (Internet Protocol)-based, will be individually addressable and controllable in terms of context, content, duration and time slots from a central control location. more

Display, in addition to usual task, be for geography of station (surrounding places and distances of places of interest, like in Delhi location of AIIMS, where patients want to drop in, or location of Red fort where tourists have interest, in some cases tourists lodges and local site seeing operators) may be displayed. Each station has some significance in the eyes of passenger and it is of interest to them. Say in Agra details relating tajmahal, at mathura the temple of Krishna, at chennai the eye hospital, at ahemdabad sabarmati ashram, etc. may be displayed. It was practice earlier, but at some point of time withdrawn from metro and suburb station. One instance would make my point clear. Some 30 years ago, I wanted to go to bus stand from Nagpur station. The ricksha took money for 4 km, but later I noticed that the distance was hardly 250 meter.
