DIGITAL INDIA
The Metric system for Currency, Temperature, Weights and Measures; was adopted soon after independence. Besides, the temperature is now being measured in Degree Celsius. However, the nomenclature and wordings remained the same as before viz ‘senkda (hundreds), lac, crore’ etc, in all financial dealings, taxation, accountancy and reports. This is not compatible with the Metric & Digital system. For all mathematical, scientific, technological, financial reports, project reports and accountancy purposes etc, the following system in digits and words; is being adopted world-wide:- 1. Zero, Kilo, Million/Mega, Billion, Trillion etc - towards the increasing side
2. Zero, milli, micro, nano, picro etc - towards the reducing side
(There is no equivalent in old Indian nomenclature system; and so the modern terminologies have to be used in any case) If metric system could be adopted by the society in a short time; there is no reason that adoption of modern nomenclature will be difficult. The country is going to be digitized on a massive scale. But there is resistance to use the words million, billion, trillion etc.
During the changeover to metric system; the standard ‘Paisa’ was termed as ‘Naya Paisa’ for the sake of convenience of common man. Thus the standard ‘Paisa’ became approximately equal to ‘1.5625 Naya Paisa’. In course of time, the term Naya Paisa was forgotten and got itself termed as ‘Paisa’ (100 Naya Paisa equal to Rupee 1, while the old 64 standard Paisa used to be equal to Rupee 1).
However, in case adoption of standard universal nomenclature is not feasible; then the word ‘lac’ can be termed ‘Naya Lac’ in lieu of 1million i.e 10 lac or 1000K (1,000,000); while ‘Naya Crore’ in lieu of 1billion i.e. standard 100 crore or 1000 Naya Lac (1,000,000,000). In course of time; people will also get used to it and forget the past. In any case professionals are already used to the modern Metric/Digital system.
