Doctors taking cuts from pathology

Was recently in Jhansi and learned that Doctors take 40% to 50% commissions on tests they refer to a particular lab.

Can LocalCircles please bring this out in the public domain and it should be in the consumer protection act or medical code of ethics that any Doctor taking such cuts will be barred for life from practicing and their degree stripped ?

Also if u ever go to a lab for tests demand 40-50% discount because the Doc has been cut out

Yes, what Aditi and other LC members have commented are true and it has happened with me also. Some of the lab and even a few doctors openly accepts this practice and cite many frivolous reasons for it. Well, for buying medicines, one may go to Jan aushadi stores but what about the Labs. Everyone is aware about such malpractices . May be naming and shaming these doctors and particularly these Labs and run an organized campaign against them, be tried out.
Govt. has already fixed charges for various tests for CGHS beneficiaries. The same charges should be applicable for others also. This will make a big difference in medical expenses. Local circles can approach the Govt. on this issue.
It is an old practice of paying cuts of around 40% to 50% of the cost of different tests by the concerned diagnostic centers to the recommending doctors and an open secret. I have seen one of my relatives having diagnostic center making weekly visits to the doctors' chambers to pay off their share for referri8ng the patients to them for the tests. But it won't be easy to prove the existence of such illegal practice which exists on verbal understandings and the concerned diagnostic centers will seldom come forward against the doctors.
Medical Profession is no longer a Noble Profession. A patient going to a Doctor is already in a weak condition and is easily exploited. Besides most of the persons have no knowledge about medical treatment. The charges for tests and medicines should be fixed at a reasonable level by the Govt as is being done under CGHS treatment. This will reduce the cost to a great extent. However the matter should be brought to the notice of Govt. at proper level. We already have shops selling Generic medicines and the costs are almost less than half of the cost in medical shops.
Generic medicines are less than 30% of the prices of branded ones of similar combinations.
Even if you have adequate knowledge about medical treatment, it won't help you get reduced prices either in the hospitals and/or in the prices of the prescribed medicines.
Its a well known fact that commission business exists in medical profession. But it is not? However, in medical profession, it is difficult to prove though true. Making Laws will not solve the problem.
