Earthquake and Indian Cities

Per urban and disaster experts, an earthquake of 6.5 magnitude can flatten the entire Delhi/NCR area given its seismic zone location.

One of the reasons why damage to life and property in India can be far greater is haphazard, unscientific construction, construction with violations and in many cases nexus between approving authorities and builders.

Construction approving authorities, the municipalities need a major overhaul in terms of guidelines and their enforcement

With this post we would like to seek your inputs on the various actions that are needed to minimize the impact of earthquakes in India.

We look forward to your inputs and will take them up with the key stakeholders in the country. more

Hi, My comments may seem rediculous, but my question is why govt. would allow private schools, why not Govt. should give free education up to secondary and having common syllabus across the country. It may not be possible due to budget limitations but if you introduce something like education cess on all (including farmers). I hope it may not impossible. If you want to have unique, good, more productive Indian future generations, all must be qualified same at some level. I hope that would make better India in future in global competition. See China, they are going well ahead in manufacturing, India also will go like that if there is well educated generations in future. Make higher education private and competitive( I mean at university level). There may be some problems regarding cultural and regional preferences in education. But all that will be with regional language only. more
We as a country will only l irrespective of the dangers involved. We can only hope for the bestand if and when a calamity of the magnitude occurs. Almost every one is more involved in making money by hook or crook more
Our system of "tolerance" in all matters, regardless of consequence is the root cause. The "chalta hai" system should be loaded with responsibility and accountability such that it dies to be born again (Phoenix) as a robust, no nonsense quality based and efficient machine. All are to be blamed for this state -- starting from the common man, the politician and the judiciary which has all been shy of taking a tough stand. more
There should not be any choice given to common man because he does not understand and visualize the damage that may occur due earthquake but when there is earthquake, everyone blames the Government for the damage. Hence, the guidelines for structural design in relevant earthquake zones be made mandatory. more
