Educational institutions and the link between RTE and Conversions
Sample case –
In East Bangalore there is more number of Christian schools. For a person who has wealth, it doesn’t matter because they can and are willing to pay donations etc. and get admission for their children. However, for people who are economically backward, (middle class) and who are Hindus, it is very difficult because there only Christian schools around this area and they give preference to Christians because they are called ‘Minority Institutions’.
So the only current work around for such people is to Convert to Christianity. This would help in getting quality education for their children, concessions in tuition fees and other fees.
However, the goal and objective of RTE is defeated because even if you come under RTE, you need to be a Christian to get preferential Admission.
I request the education ministry to make every educational institution to be meant only for Education, and not divide them as Majority and Minority institutions.
This would help implementing RTE effectively and also help Hindus in the society. (please check the recent news shown on TV9 about a 100 yr old institution in East Bangalore).
My own experience –
I had gone to a school to collect admission forms. The HM asked me ‘Which religion I belonged to’ and when I said ‘Hindu’, was promptly told that admissions are over in February itself and forms will not be given.
I said this is not for me, but for my uncle’s son. My uncle had converted to Christianity. She asked me whether it was protestant / Catholic and asked for proof. I showed his rechristened name on the vehicle license and his son’s registered name with the Church (the original is a Hindu name). I immediately got a form to fill and he got admission.
My uncle was born Hindu, but decided to convert only because of economical reason and to educate his son.He also got a job easily
I’m wondering if I also have to convert to get good education for my family and to get a better job.
Actually this was not the case 30 yrs ago when I was studying in the same locality in another Christian school (not an affluent one).At that time we got admissions regardless of religious affinity.
Even though the Govt. rolled out good educational schemes for Dalits, it does not convert to jobs, because we have more private companies. Hence we have educated dalits without jobs. To get jobs we need to convert because they help each other. Dalits who have Govt jobs prosper but again their children who didn’t get jobs or are working in pvt sector are going back to poverty level, thus forcing conversions. more
