Extortion in India - Inputs on Issues

Friends,

Many of you through posts/comments and private posts have written over the last year asking us to take up this subject.

Extortion (also called shakedown, outwrestling, and exaction) is a criminal offense of obtaining money, property, or services from a person, entity, or institution, through coercion.

With this post we would like to request all of you to list issues/cases related to this subject. The objective is to understand issues, causes around it, develop solutions and then affect law & order policies in a way that such practices are minimized in our nation.

Someone collecting fair dues from another party as defined in terms of contract must not be confused with extortion and is something that should be processed efficiently and effectively through our legal system.

We look forward to your inputs!

Extortion in India is rampant in all Fields and will continue till Citizen Responsibilities at article 51 A , Law and Order at Constitutional guarantee ARE NOT MANDATED PROPERLY AND PROMPTLY . Till then, the IPC and, Constitutional Clause -1 of Article 19 will never be in the right direction . more

police does extortion.....they dont even write fir without taking money........judiaciary does extortion......one has to pay 5 lakhs for single hearing in supreme court......when this wil stop all other extortion wil automatically stop more
The comments of Mr. Ramesh Kamath are to but it can't justify extortion of money and/or earning extra in illegal manner. There are many people working hard and earning extremely inadequate to their livelihood but living happily. Extortion is taking place everywhere and only thing is that one has to be alert to find out such happenings. Contractors use substandard materials, leave the works incomplete and resort to many other acts to save from the contracted money as they have to pay a portion of the contract amount as commission right from the peon to the highest authority plus the local leaders. This practice is in vogue every where and in every works and deals. People fight election spending crores of rupees. Of course the money does not come from the pockets of the leaders or from the savings of their fore fathers. The source of the money is any bodys' guess. more
