Farmers disconnect from urban consumer

Farmers in MP are forced to sell,
Garlic at ₹ 1/kg, Onion at ₹ 5/kg
Potato at ₹ 6/kg

Why are the ecommerce platforms not buying these supplies and selling for 20 per kg. more

This is nothing new. It has been going on for generations. Number of Middle Men involved and Transportation cost are the main factors to Decide price for last Consumer. There is a good margin of profit at every stage and that is why last consumer has to pay heavily. Also being a perishable commodity, losses/wastage is also very high. more
Govt. could easily improve the earning of small farmers by streamlining the operational efficiency of all Agri produce marketing agencies instead of making them defunct. That could pave the way to remove the middleman from supply chain and improve outreach. How Mother Diary could make it happen? more
The prices quoted in the post are apparently exaggerated as this season (rainy season) is not the growing season of these produces and even in the season of their cultivation and harvesting, the prices thereof, particularly, the price of garlic rarely goes to such a low level. Unless all our villages are well connected with all weather roads and adequate cheap mode of marketing facilities are made available to the farmers, the onslaught of the middle men will continue. Unavailability of adequate ware houses atleast at all block headquarters is a big drawback, which perforce the farmers to dispose of their produces at through away prices as the items we are talking about are easily perishable and their holding for long without proper storing facilities is risky. more
The main purpose of bringing in the agricultural reforms bills last year was to bring out the farmers from the clutches of these crooked middle men. Unfortunately, the government was forced to roll back those bills because of continued agitation by the so called farmers against the bills supported by a section of the media and the society for their vested interests though it was an established fact that the majority of the agitators were the middle men, the suckers of blood of the real farmers. Even very few from the consumers side (common people) stood by the government and supported the bills. Now only on knowing the big gaps in the prices of these produces in fields and the prices we, consumers, are forced to pay to the retailers, we woke up, which would serve no purpose! more
For all those who were skeptical about the Farmers agitation in Delhi - this will still not be an eye opener as most have now become "Yes Sir" & "Yes Minister" of Government and will call anyone opposing Government tainted, terrorist or desh-drohi. However it is a fact that much before the Kissan Andolan last year, Tamil Nadu farmers had borne severe summer heat and agitated for 4 months at Jantar Mantar but no minister from current dispensation even called them or heard them. In many States this sort of situation is there. While farmers of MP are not even getting break even, we in Delhi pay Rs.30/- per kg for Onions & Rs.30/- for 250 gms of garlic (a whooping Rs.120/- KG) so who is sucking away the profits? more
