Farmers should avoid violence
Appropos the editorial on 'The rot in farming ' andthe article on'More to it than MSP' , the editorial was balanced but the article based on some statisics was lopsiDed.As far as my knowledge goes the real problem with farmers are not farm debt as State and central Goverments over the years were showering so many subsides to farmers such as, Bank credit at low interesrt by NABARD for farm implements,. free electicity, susidised seeds, fertilisers, and Procuring at MSP. Farm loans from co-op.socities given every year which mosly are waived off over the years. The over indulgence by them in conducting family functions and mariages with not less than 100 soverigns to satiate their false ego land them in debt with the unscrupolous money lenders expecting good monsoon and harvest. When it fails they fall in to debt and the money lendrs behave like the infamous Shylak and poor farmers end their life not able to with stand the humility. They dont have enrgy or whrewithall to even agitate . The Sugar Barons and Big Land Lords who are politicaliy inclined create all these problems by finacing the poor to fight and they lay their life for these unscrupulous politician land Lords as any waiver of Farm Loans are going to benifit only the Big Benamy Lanlord Politicians and not the real small and medium farmers as they have alrady sold or mortgaged their land to these big Sharks. The consumers arealso not benifited by the fall in prices of farm commodities as Traders make a huge profit out of it. When the commodity passes through muliple hands its price goes up and the consumer pays heavy price even though Farmer gets very low price for his produce. So there should be strict control in procurement price and selling price. Unless this is implemented the both farmers and the consumers are continue to suffer and the politicians will thirve looting both.
Further I want to share my personal experiance during my stay in my village in Thanjavur district last year for 6 months during the farming season. Due to non realase of water in the Cauvery and non availability of ground water as the little water available was taken away by the big land lords using high horse power motors and free electircity offered by the state most of the small and medium farmers holding less than 2 acres of land could not do any cultivatoon and left thier lands fallow. Further there was also non availability of farm labours due to MNGRES where they get money for doing little work. Even during the worst draugt yeras of 1960s when i was a boy in the village the ground water was available in the wells and ponds as there was no sand mafia then. When free electicity without any limit for motor capacity was intoduced by the parties in power then coupled with the unsrupulous sand mining without any control, the groun water began to deplete and coupled with non releasing of water in Cauvery by Karnataka as per the Tribunal Awards all the wells in old Tanjore and Trichy districts conseqently gone dry.Further as most of the water bodies like lakes, Ponds and Tanks which went dry were encroached upon and sold as plots during the last 50 years rendering the capacity to store flood waters very difficult when it rains copiusly in some years. In Rajastan it rains well once in 6 years but the people store even a single drop of water because they are aware of the precious thing called water. Whenit rained heavily in2015 Tamil nadu failed to store the water due to the grreedy politicians looting of the land and sand and the entire rain water flowed in to the sea.Unless we realise our mistakes and rejunuvate the water bodies and buid as many check dams as possible across rivers and try to store the water when it rains and not exploite the precious commodity we will be suffering eternally and there is no use accusing others for our own mistakes as water has become a very sensitive polical tool for to play with. The Cauvery issue could be solved permanently if they heeded the advice of Sri .Ramaswamy fr er Water Secretary to reforestration of Kodagu Hills by replacing all the cofee estates there. Then thre will be copious rains and Karnataka cannot store all thae waters and has to release the excess water. more
