Improving Fire Safety in Trains
1. The air conditioning units should be regularly serviced to prevent the chances of short circuit
2. A fire helpline with integrated response centers could be started to report and address cases of fire in trains immediately
3. Regular mock fire drills should be conducted at the stations
4. Better emergency exits should be designed
5. PVC and Halogen based components should not be used in trains
6. General public should also be trained on using fire safety equipment
7. The electrical and mechanical staff should do proper maintenance of the coaches while they are in the yard
8. All safety related positions in railways should be filled ASAP to maintain better performance and keep them fire free
9. Automated water dropping/sprinkler system should be used in coaches & should be attached with smoke censor
10. A study of international standards (Europe / US)should be done, which would help in implementing those techniques which would help to reduce the fire accidents
11. A heavy fine should be charged if a person is found smoking in the train
12. Train coaches could be painted with fire retardant paint. more

As of now the railways are trying to come up with the coaches of new design. Having seen some of the new designs, I believe they are incorporating a lot of inputs that they have received from the travelling public. A couple of issues are as below. 1 - One major sore point is the lack of water in the toilets in long distance trains and the lack of refilling service at all stations. The railways can plan to build larger water tanks in existing coaches or plan to put in larger tanks in new coaches. Alternatively they can build water tanks to the underside of coaches where space permits and have a system to pump the water to overhead tank over the toilets in an automatic manner. This will alleviate the issue to a large extent. I have noticed that there are refilling services at all major stations and is being done promptly but still the issue persists. 2 - Coaches should be fitted with LED lights as they are much cheaper now and easy to maintain and give trouble free service. These lights, again, should not be usable at homes or with any other power supply outputs and thus will discourage theft of the same. 3 - Toilets in the coaches should have floors which aid complete drainage of water spilled on floor so as to avoid stagnation of water. Futher, the floor should be made slip proof and user friendly for old and infirm. 4 - The doors of the coaches need to be made lighter and easy to operate.
