There is no harm in raising fares provided it's based on some understandable logic. Airlines also charge more for last minute bookings. In railways' case, the last minute passengers in many cases simply bribed the train babu to get a seat. Let the money go to railways instead by charging higher fare for last minute bookings. Further, the railways can also charge more if they improve the passenger experience in terms of comfort, timeliness, cleanliness, easy of catching the train, etc. Service improvements are essential to lift the image of railways. Railways are used by many poor people and as such general fare should remain reasonable. more
