Aflatoxins are carcinogenic

Aflatoxins can occur in foods such as groundnuts, tree nuts, maize, rice, figs and other dried foods, spices, crude vegetable oils and cocoa beans, as a result of fungal contamination before and after harvest. Several types of aflatoxins are produced naturally. Aflatoxin B1 is the most common in food and among the most potent genotoxic and carcinogenic aflatoxins.

I wasnt familiar with aflatoxins but it seems likes fungus in food. FSSAI has issued this note recently which I think is useful. more

As per the enclosed note issued by the FSSAI, any of the food items including milk, cereals, food grains etc. can be contaminated with AFLATOXINS depending upon the condition their harvesting and preservation. As such, there are every chances that we are consuming such contaminated food items in our daily diets making little difference as to whether the foods are home made or dined outside since the consumers are unaware about the quality of the ingredients purchased from the market. There are no reasons to believe that the producers and/or the suppliers of food items discard and destroy such contaminated items taking due care for public health. more

I must appreciate Ms Harsimran Kaur for attaching the FSSAI circular. Though mostly people are aware but many neglect it for lack of knowledge. Regular eating out or food cooked by maids is therefore a cause of concern. We should take utmost care while preparing food. more
