Fortified Foods means when certain micro nutrients or elements like Iron, Iodine, Vit. B12, Calcium, Vit. D, Folic Acid, DHA etc are added to the main food components/raw material. This is useful for those who have deficiency of particular element/s. So the element/constituent that needs to be fortified is added & taken by the concerned person & not by all. Unless & until sufficient tests are conducted & it is proved that those elements are in shortage & needs to be given along with the main food then this fortification is useful. Sometimes there are problems of allergies or reactions in the form of stomach upset, severe headache or indigestion &^ so many other unwanted ailments start by taking these fortified foods. That is why it is always better to start on a very small scale & keep on getting tested & meeting Doctor for further advice. It is wrong to think & say once the fortified food started means it is to be taken forever. Any excess is equally or more dangerous than any thing in less percentage. more
Food fortification per se is very good concept to make the micro-nutrient requirements meet through main food raw material intake. However, it is not emphasised by the law enforcement agencies to specify how much quantity of fortified micro- nutrient is actually available to the consumer, after cooking of the food using fortified food raw material e.g. Fortification of edible oil with Vit A & D is advocated. It is really not clear what is the per cent (of fortified quantity) left in the end product. Heat labile nutrients are destroyed till the final product is ready for consumption. If retention of fortified (added) nutrient is not assured then the fortification remains a formality and tool to be fool the customer at his cost. It may make the food industry rich but the consumer nutritionally poor. more
Food fortification was a good idea. But what is actually happening now is what is written by Shri Kaushikk D. Vyas. What has happened in 1970 is only a story in the present day and people will not even believe. Iodine is present in ginger and in sea fish in the organic form, a form that can be assimilated by our body. Instead of that what is the use of adding iodine as periodic acid which is totally soluble in water and not assimilated by our body. It was only to cheating the public by the MNCs , helped by corrupt ministers. Instead of fortifying the food try to eat varieties of food and also from varied sources to get proper nutrition. Do not keep on eating the same item from the same source. Keep on changing it. Food fortification is also a cheating process in the clutches of Kali, a yuga of cheating, fighting and ignorance wherein people like us are cheated by westerners more
Food fortification is one of the measures to get adequate micronutrients in the diet .It is not harmful as long as doses do not exceed one recommended dietary allowance. Most fortified products do not contain high amounts. Of course you can get all micronutrients from the diet provided you eat a very balanced meal and cook the food at the right temperature and the micronutrients are bioavailable. more
