Food Fortification

I feel the Govt may be trying to force food fortification on us which may be a bad idea. Not everyone needs to eat fortified food in India. It is those who are deficient in certain nutrients who need to take fortified food. If some of us have all the nutrients from regular diet plus a supplement or two, that should be enough. Can some experts enlighten us? more

Can anyone tell me, whether the living body is the action-doer or the (fortified) food... I believe it is the living body... Therefore, for nutrition purpose, the definition of 'balanced diet' should be re-written as: "a food article from which the living body can extract all (optimum) nutritious values", instead of 'a food article which contains all (optimum) nutritious values' (as per laboratory tests) .... If this is done, the entire syllabi of the modern dietetics and nutrition would crumble like a pack of cards.... And people would be forced to avail the chance of eating fresh/ raw food articles... which is the most important requirement for health recovery and sustainable health maintenance.... more
A very vague statement made. Can the writer please specifically state the food and type of fortification? No meaningful discussion can ensue with such ambiguous statements. Col (Dr) A P Gupta (Retd) more
The reasons for such a feeling should have been clarified for the benefit of the members. more
Nobody is forced to buy fortified foods. Consumer can choose as he pleases. Fortified foods are identified by a symbol. Fortification is being done very scientifically after extensive study of Indian food habits and Nutrition. The segment that needs fortification the most now has access to it without buying expensive multi-vitamin/multi-minerals. Costs are astonishingly low. more
we may talk of fortified food or organic food. The reality is the market is flooded with dangerously chemically treated, Harmon injected food items. Every day new items are being added. The triggers are the fast return of investments and least discomforts. The category of items includes vegetables , fruits, dry foods, food grains, milk and its products and soft drinks. We talk of healthy food, the doctors recommend. But some one should tell us where to go to get the same in its natural form. Thus all the treatments based on diet become a fraud for a common man. We do not get natural food today. Can some one, in Government, think of a quick remedy for this syndrome created by traders and farmers. It could be a scheme with partnership of a common man. more
