Food Quality in Railways - Inputs Needed on Solutions

Dear Friends,

Based on your inputs, here are some of the key root causes for the state of food in railways.

1. Catering services are outsourced, no system for quality check
2. Contracts are usually taken by small time vendors/ businessmen who want to make maximum money during contact period
3. Food is prepared and served by novices
4. No background check while choosing vendors
5. No sense of responsibility - they use substandard food ingredients to save more & more money
6. There is a corrupt nexus between the vendors and the officials
7. Mistakes of the food contractors and pantry boys are overlooked
8. Pantry boys fill the bottles with tap water and make money on them
9. Contractors not fined in case they don’t meet the required standards
10. No supervisor appointed to oversee the pantry operations
11. Pantry boys not educated on self -hygiene
12. Visitor entry allowed via pantry to different coaches – brings more dirt to the pantry car
13. Insufficient facilities to preserve huge quantity foods

Personally I feel the inclusion of a catering bogie in the train along with all its attendant issues of manning, safety, hygiene, food storage and logistics and maintaining quaity standards is a highly inefficient and uneconomic affair. When the focus for a poor country like India should be to having a safe, efficient and clean rail service at minimum cost to the travelling public dependant on rail travel. Of course food is an issue for long distance trains but the far cheaper and more efficient alternatives in my humble opinion is to have standard menu and standard quality products served through outlets at major stations (not even all stations) outsourced to reasonably leading and reputed private restaurant/ food chains. The Railways could just review this system. This will be far less taxing to the Railway system while delivering the good to the public at the same time. more

Railway has to take immediate action against the caters on receipt of the complaints. I have given complaints no 1864 while travelling in Premium train no 22914 from Delhi to Mumbai on 17th July 2014 but still no action taken and still the caters is giving the same poor service. more

Further to my mail Recently I traveled to Bhopal by Shatabdi placed below are the complaint Sir, I have been frequent traveler of New Delhi Bhopal Shatabdi train since its insertion by late Minister Shri Scindia. Off late I found the services of this train gone from worse to worst . Recently I traveled on 2nd September along with my wife vide PNR no 2737105666 having seat no 18 and 19 in coach C-9. Following are my observation and complaint 1 CLEANLINESS ;- Though the train starts from New Delhi but the train was dirty Toilets were stinking and dirty. Toilets seats were so dirty that my wife refuses to use. This train gets many foreign Tourists they also complaint about the dirty Toilets .My wife used the Hand Sanitizer to clean the toilet seat and also gave the sanitizer to the Tourist. Though they were appreciating about the provision of mobile charger on every row of the seats but for the cleanliness . Though there was liquid soap which has more liquid than soap and there was no tissue paper. I demanded the Complaint Book but could not get the same . 2 CATERING ;- At one time catering of this train was one of the best but now it is worst ever. You are charging Rs 210 per passenger for the meals and we do not know what type of meal we are getting .There is no choice same old menu of Veg and Non Veg meals . Quantity and quality have gone down considerably . In variably after morning tea the staff do not serve tea after the break fast One has to ask than the staff will give in a half filled cup without Thermos . The moment train crosses Jhansi staff start serving the Lunch at 11 AM. Though the train reaches Bhopal after 2 pm Reason best known to them. No one was there to listen the complaint. Similarly when we came back on 6th Sept vide PNR No. 8727100989 Seat no 45 and 46 in C12 Coach same complaint of cleanliness train and toilets. Here the staff gave us the dinner after 10 PM and that too without Curd which was given when most of the passengers finished their meal. We asked the supervisor of the catering about this delay and about the quality and quantity of the meals he quietly listened and when we asked the feed back form and complaint book he went to get the same but did not returned. The problem is there is no supervision .The TTE comes and check the ticket and disappear .You have increased the railway fare but the service has been worst ever. I know if you will ask the staff about the above incident they will say they are not aware any such incident. It is my humble request to keep the complaint book in each and every coach so that one can lodge the complaint without going to the Train Supervisor. Further Passengers should be told about the quantity of the meals . Though we are getting meals in packed form no body knows how much is the quantity . I have found off late that the quantity is also reduced. On an average 1000 passengers are traveling by shatabdi daily and if quantity is reduced by 30 gms PER PASSENGER than one can imagine how much the contractor will be saving the material daily..
