Food Safety in Maharashtra - Inputs Sought

FSSAI (The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India ) has a Food Safety circle available via -
http://bit.ly/foodsafety-community

We would like to seek your inputs on what are the various issues you see in regards to food safety in your city in Maharashtra. These could be in regards to artificial ripening, packaged food, food product itself, restaurant hygiene levels, street food, adulteration, etc.

We would also look at how district food safety officials can be given access to the circle followed by a city level food safety/consumer circle in your city.

We look forward to your inputs! more

Indeed all three posts are true and must be handled strictly by local Authorities Sudhakar Kulkarni more
At the very lowest level, there is no awareness of food safety, hygiene. This must change. FSSAI can print simple leaflets in local language that can be distributed to every hawker/food producer on the street. Just a few simple steps to maintain hygiene, like washing hands, washing utensils in clean, flowing water, use of caps to prevent hair falling, keeping in closed utensils to prevent insects, using fresh and wholesome ingredients, using stainless steel utensils for storage and cooking, using disposable gloves to serve, using potable water, keeping dustbin, serving in disposable paper plates, and so on. Show through a demo on how to follow the instructions. Solve their problems about potable water, flowing water for washing, refuse disposal etc. Lets do this and see the big difference it will bring about in public health and public awareness. The costs will be offset by better health and lower medical costs. more
These all food safety issues are due to lack of following Rules & Acts by government officials. They are lacking to implement the health & hygiene. more
Every city /village has street vendors. Many of them do not follow the Food Safety norms nor do they have any registrations with FSSAI. FSSAI Body itself is not competent to keep the things under control. Every week you can observe a new stall comers up in your vacant area mostly belonging to the government. More so in work areas, park areas, bus stop or railway station areas, outside the malls and in bye lanes too. They are not only unhygienic but also pose a threat to the social life by causing fire hazards of using gas/stove in open areas of their stalls which are temporary structures. It is not only FSSAI - the other government departments are also involved in not controlling the upcomings of these stalls. more
Packaging of street food remains a big concern e.g. use of newspapers, polythene bags etc. There should be a regulation with regard to packing like prohibiting use of lose papers, polythene bags and proper use of packing material needs to be specified more
