Food Served in Educational Institute canteens and Hostel Messes
There has been mmuvh debate on Food safety in commercial establishments such as hotels and restaurants. However , few realize that our kids are constantly exposed to unsafe food environments at school or college ( particularly private and unaided institutions) in their academic years. There are no external independent food safety audits , swab checks or regulatory oversight performed on presence or absence of good Hygeine and GMP practices in these institutes food serving outlets . They must be brought under scrutiny via accredited third party or independent lab checks. Is FSSAI listening ? more

Thanks Sharmaji for bringing up such an important issue in social circles. I don't want to take the name of a prestigious engineering college in Delhi where my daughter got admission in 2000 but left it because very pure quality of food was cooked in extremely filthy unhygienic conditions. I stayed in the same hostel with my friend in 80s. Surprisingly the conditions were nearly same, when I tried to speak to the Director of Institute a very dry answer (which no one can expect from such senior professor of a prestigious institute) that I must feel lucky that the facilities were maintained at least the same level and didn't deteriorate in 20 years. My daughter thrice admitted in hospital because of food poisoning and at the end sent to Australia to complete her Engineering. This issue must be presented to FSSAI so they can keep check on these educational places. more

It is the prime responsibility of institutions and residential hostels to ensure by law that the cooking place, ingredients, personable and systems are acceptable for safe ,hygienic ,nutritious food delivery at that point. Legally they are liable. more

Serving of inferior & poor quality foods in schools often becomes breaking news in media on occurring any terrifying incidents taking lives of several innocent children because of serving of inferior and contaminated foods completely unfit for humane consumption. Whenever & wherever such incidents occur, the administration immediately become active and initiate some action in hurry to pacify the public resentment and apathy towards the government. It does not take much time for our people to forget and forgive and once it happens, the administration again becomes lethargic & negligent towards this burning issue and all their plans and programmes drawn are sent back to the cold storage waiting for repetition of such heart rending incidents. more
