Garbage management in India – Root Causes

1. No fines imposed by the Government
2. Dustbins are stolen from public places
3. Rag pickers make a mess in the dumps and also burn stuff to get metal/copper etc.
4. The Municipal collection of garbage does not happen regularly on time and hence the overflow
5. With the advancement in technology and its cheap availability, the old electronic devices are thrown away
6. Plastic bags are cheap and available very easily
7. No law/mandate from the Government to maintain a waste disposal unit area/society wise
8. People have a mental block and they don’t want to change
9. The ‘chalta hai’ attitude of the people makes the condition worse
10. Municipal departments still have an old style of working and don’t want to invest in latest equipment
11. Zero awareness about this in rural India
12. Hawkers don’t clean the area where they stand thinking the municipal corporation will get it cleaned up in the morning
13. Local Corporators & MLAS do NOT take any active part to mobilise the local people's awareness
14. Municipal workers are lazy and don’t do their job well
15. People who carry the garbage have no patience to put it in the bins

First of all never consider dirt, household waste or any other kind of waste as a problem for the society but an opportunity for all It is important to understand that waste is not our problem but is an opportunity for all to extract To Covert the problem of waste to an opportunity some steps are provided, that will benefit us all Awareness program for the people are required which will encourage them to collect waste from their household and distinguish them according to the their type. The waste that can be recycled (eg. plastics, broken glass, iron, electronic waste etc.) will be stored in garbage bucket 1 and garbage bucket 2 will contain the items which can be converted to energy (eg. vegetable waste news papers, notebooks, wooden waste ). these waste thus collected during night will be collected by the company people (public/ private firms). 1) The garbage items in 1 box can be recycled as their presence is limited (such as electronic waste & glass, which can be send to the electronic companies or glass making companies) and can be remolded and reintegrated into the design. 2) The items in garbage 2 can be dumped into a biogas plant, from which biogas can be extracted for cooking/ power generation. 3) Manure collected can be used for agriculture *****To make this initiative possible the biogas companies in a global way must distribute some feasible amount of money to the people equally in terms the waste that are collected. more
