GLITCHES IN DIGITAL TICKETING

As the Chennai Division of Southern Railways pursues its mission to promote digital transactions, ticketing staff have raised concerns about glitches that delay ticket issuance. Staff are reporting persistent issues with connectivity and slow network speeds.

The introduction of Quick Response (QR) codes for unreserved tickets was intended to streamline cash handling and expedite ticket issuance, minimizing queues. Unfortunately, the new system has not delivered on these promises, and passengers are bearing the brunt of these delays. Some have even missed their trains due to the time taken to process tickets through the digital system. Another significant issue is the frequent payment failures on mobile devices, where money is debited without a ticket being issued.
The staff have noted that cash payments are being processed at three times the rate of QR code transactions, leading them to question why there is pressure to use the digital system despite its current inefficiencies.
Concerns Raised by the Union

The Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU) has responded to these ongoing issues, putting up posters to condemn the management’s handling of the digital ticketing initiative. This has raised questions about whether the glitches are the only issue or if there are deeper concerns at play regarding the implementation of the digital ticketing system.

E-Ticketing through IRCTC
Additionally, many passengers have reported connectivity issues and network delays when booking reserved tickets through the IRCTC platform, especially for the long distance trains and during peak travel periods. Users often find that, despite reaching the final payment stage, the system may fail, resulting in a missed opportunity for a confirmed ticket. By the time they attempt to rebook, only waitlisted tickets remain available. It’s widely believed that touts and agents, using high-speed internet connections, are able to secure these tickets more swiftly, disadvantaging the average passenger.

A Call to Action
The Railways should address these persistent technical challenges to ensure a fair “first-come, first-served” booking system for all passengers. Improving the reliability and speed of digital ticketing is crucial for meeting the demands of today’s commuters and enhancing trust in the system. more

It is true. Digiyal ticketing introduced in Mumbai and all its suburban stations. Many a time, ticket ckerk says payment not received. Besides sliw process, the passanger finally gives up digital route and gives cash for short distance journey. If passanger extends either ₹ 100 or ₹200 for ₹ 10.00, the ckerk refuses to accept the payment for short distance. Ratherthan making passanger suffering, if railways instal more kiosks for digital booking of current tickets, because, buying digital tickets possible only when he has anroid smart phone and others can book their ticket from counter. Or encourage on line booking. more
Internet speed may be less and especially in main city junctions like bangalore .chennai etc the bandwidth has also to be high to cater to the large volume of people and no of counters also need to be increased so that rush is reduced more
Not all stations are equipped with high-speed internet and the alacrity with which the queues should be handled is not thought of thoroughly. Digital transformation involves third-party intervention. If they fail to provide QoS, the Railways will be in shambles. They need to look at this issue from all angles, no cosmetic solution will help. more

All reforms, disruptive in nature, have vulnerability for subversions from the vested interests. This aspect may also be looked into while evolving a viable solution. more
