Most Hallmarking centers are family run businesses which also sell gold jewellery under different names. Though forbidden, BIS cannot or does not do anything about this. Non family member employees are generally found only at the time of audit not otherwise. In certain cases, it is reliably learnt that the same employees are present at other centers that are being audited! The list goes on... However, Hallmarking is a step in the right direction. Hope the loop holes will be closed and new ones do not surface. more

Hallmarking procedures of ISO still have a number of loop holes, which permit the auditor and the seller to collude cleverly against the hapless, ignorant buyer. The authorities know this but are not concerned. This is the ONLY industry in which an nth attempt SSLC pass individual, with very little knowledge of analytical chemistry and quality procedures can be appointed as the Quality Manager. This half baked individual certifies the purity of gold as 916!!! BIS has made things very easy for the vendors who generally cannot read and understand English. It prepares the quality manual for them in a standard format, which they download, print and sign (of the SSLC guy). There is a lot to this industry that needs to be checked and changed. Interestingly, I am told that the head of the international organisation that sets procedures etc for Hallmarking is also Indian. I wonder whether this is why the ISO procedure for Hallmarking is so lax. more

Let us wait and see as to how the government authorities concerned ensure that the stipulated standard is invariably ensured after making 'hallmarking' compulsory or the cheaters show their thumbs to the law makers by introducing a system to dilute the provisions and continuing their cheating activities as happened in the railway reservation system. more

Hallmarking is essential and the authority issuing the hallmarking should be genuine and authentic. more

Hall marking has nothing to do with re -buying gold ornaments. If hall marking centers re-buy gold it is as personal business not connected with hallmarking by BIS. more
