Good move by Delhi govt

A new notification from Delhi govt last week virtually eliminates the use of coal from everything except in power plants, where coal with 0.4 per cent sulphur will be permitted. But Delhi has also taken the decision to shut down its coal power plants—including the Badarpur plant. With coal and other dirty fuels like petcoke and furnace oil banned, industrial units will have to shift to cleaner alternatives such as piped natural gas, electricity or BS-VI diesel.

This new notification is an amendment of the original List of Approved Fuels notified by the Delhi government on August 27, 1996—a decision which was precipitated by the widespread use of dirty domestic and industrial fuels in the city. The toxic, soot-laden emissions caused by the combustion of fuels such as tyre oil and viscous and high sulphur fuel/furnace oil in industry led to very high concentration of oxides of sulphur and nitrogen, as well as particulate matter.

The new notification has permitted the following fuels:

Bharat Stage VI compliant petrol and diesel with 10 ppm sulphur
Liquid Petroleum Gas
Natural gas/Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)
Aviation turbine fuel
Firewood for crematoriums and for other religious purposes
Wood charcoal for Tandoors and grilles of hotels/restaurants/banquet halls/eateries having emission channelization/control systems
Wood charcoal for use in clothes ironing
Biogas
Refuse derived fuel (only for waste-to-energy plants) more

PNG pipeline cannot be fitted at places having more covered areas, leaving no space for leaking gas to escape in case of any mishap And we know that people are greedy to cover up as much as they can. more
The industrial units of Delhi where PNG connections are available had already converted to Gas as it is cheaper than other alternative fuels. There were many areas where IGL had not laid down pipelines for PNG connection. Now they are about to complete their pipeline and are giving connections. Whenever we talk about pollution the first target is always industry. Ironically all the polluting industries had been shifted out of delhi decades ago by supreme court orders. The industrialists of delhi are always keen to keep the environment clean. more
The essential efforts for improving environment are many and the referred order may have impact on not more than 20% source of air pollution. [1] Soil dust at ground level due to poor management of construction activities is yet to be sensibly addressed imposing needed effectiveness. [2] Pollution caused by vehicles increase multi-fold due to slow/standstill vehicles due to road encroachments and poor/ineffective control in road traffic management. This is one major and undue source and Delhi government should be able to address it through Transport Department in direct control. [3] City waste (organic and inorganic) is required to be appropriately managed by civic agencies. [4] Waste/Drain/Sewage water treatment and water management including recycling can be conveniently implemented by Delhi Jal Board. more
This has not being done willingly. The Govt had to do this under NGT and supreme court guidelines. The tussle between the state and centre Govt has made Delhi a smoking chamber. These winters are expected to be worse ever. If they have any concern, they should immediately ban sales of diesel cars, which pollute 7 times more than the same capacity petrol car. more
Delhi is actually running short of coal supplies. Govt was in no mood to reduce consumption of coal otherwise. more
