It does not matter to consumers whether the hotels show service charges separately or as a gross bill. It matters only for controlling the prices as Mr. Ramesh Bhagwat has pointed out. more

If laying a service charge is banned by law, the eateries would revise the menu prices and then controlling food prices would be next to impossible. more

Government has issued guidelines which is not law. Restaurants are covered by Shop & Establishment Act of States. Therefore State Govts. need to enact a law. However this service charge should be left to the discretion of customers. Now restaurants are displaying a sign at entrance regarding service charge. Diners can decide not to enter. more

Excellent suggestion, Sri. Mohit Pande. It befuddles me why people are complaining about service charges when they have total control to avoid them by not going to, or buying food from, restaurants. more

This is such a topic that only a person with no idea of economics or free market can push. We have such important topics and worries in India and you Vijaya Nair are worried about restaurant service charge. It is such a joke. If people do not like to pay service charge don't use those facilities. Us in India need to find solutions for such high unemployment, how to cut red tape to free the economy so we can have better economic grown. You people are stuck on how to pay less at a restaurants. Why not read up and find out how this actually works before pushing this over and over again. more

Dear @vijaya Nair : service charge is firstly Taxed so yes the restaurant owners need to and pay taxes in the service charges as well. Please check the bill next time you pay. Now this service charge adds to courtesy charges / gratitude that is passed on to the service staff , kitchen food production staff and those who keep your facilities like the loos clean. This is not a debate weather it is covered in the high prices of a restaurant but when asking for removal of the Service fee please also ask the Gov for ENSURING higher salaries for the staff in the service industry so that they do not depend on the service charges. Which cannot be governed. So why the fuss on the service fees. JUST BECAUSE THE GOV OF DELHI HAS AGREED TO IT DOES NOT MEAN BJP HAS TO APPOSE IT . As Citizens we need to rationalize this to understand the need for service charges that are applicable world wide in the service industry - so why the fuss here ?? more

I am not sure whether your interpretation is quite right. When they charge for each item consumed, it is inclusive of all the facilities, staff salary and their profit. Why should we pay service charge compulsorily imposed on the consumer regardless of the services provided? This will only fatten the profits of the hotel owners at the expense of the public which is already under a lot of pressure. If the Central government does not oppose it, it will be blamed. If it tries to rectify the situation, bad motives are attributed which is not right. more
