GST on Discounted MRP

In a recent survey conducted within LocalCircles, a community of consumers, 8800 people participated and shared their woes under GST regime.
Here are some facts which came out from the survey:
• Only 23% of respondents said that they were only being charged MRP of the product. This means that massive 77% of the respondents were being charged additional taxes, despite the laws clearly forbidding it.
• 51% of respondents admitted that they were charged GST on the MRP, and received no discount for the same. This means consumers paid double taxes on the products, and the extra tax which they paid went to the pockets of the retailers
• 20% of the respondents said that they were charged GST over the MRP, but received a discount or cash-back. Only this stat from the survey seems positive, due to the ethical business practices
• 26% of the respondents admitted that they purchased products under GST regime, and didn’t take the bill/invoice. This is again a violation of law, as GST regime pushes for invoice and bill generation for every product sold. The consumers are also at fault here, as they did not ask for the bill.
Proof: Retailers Are Charging GST Over MRP!
The irony here is that Consumer Affairs Department has launched several campaigns, wherein consumers are encouraged to bargain on the MRP as well, because the MRP has a profit margin of 10-35%, normally.
But now, retailers are charging GST over MRP, which shows the unethical business practice of some retailers.
In case where it is repacked by the traders under their brand name nowhere MRP is shown and what ever they say is the MRP
Mr Modi is not willing to wait to correct such issues before introducing his revolutionary ideas AND CLAIM CREDIT to have made India a likable place for investors. Congress (which is suppoed to be the main oppositions party) on the oter hand enjoying the show since if people (after some time atleast!!) revolt it will beBeneficial for them to come to power. Net result, with either party, we suffer and accept all misdoings. Many consumers who pay through cards will not be able to see the details of tax till they pay After paid no shouting will help you and many fume within themselves and do not want to create a scene and walk away silently. It is right that shop keepers are charging additional GST on the product, if we want receipt. On the other day I was buying some electrical items for about Rs 2000.00 and then wanted a receipt. The shop keeper said that if I want receipt in 30th June date then tax will will be charged at 18%. But in today's date it will be 28.5%. This is when he calculated the price on MRP basis. So indirectly the prices are increasing by as much as 28.5%. Who is sufferer - customer. more

Only during last week I said in reply to a post on GST that the multistore I went for marketing didn't charge any GST and usual discounts on the MRPs were allowed in normal course. This must be happening in other stores and cities with some exceptions, in which cases the customers should remain alert and vehemently oppose such double taxing. It is almost 3 weeks now that the long waited GST has become a reality and I feel that the shifting from the decades old taxing systems to the GST era had been almost a smooth transition as far as consumers are concerned. Though the critics are still critical on implementation of the new taxing system blaming the government for being in hurry advocating that some time should have been allowed to the business community to understand and become accustomed with the systems of the new taxing pattern. While every one of the country were aware since last one & half year that the GST is going to replace our existing systems of taxation soon and could be implemented any time on fulfilment of the statutory requirements, how many of us had first hand information about the GST? Had the implementation was delayed by another quarter or 6 months would have not changed the position and after that period also the government would have been blamed for being in hurry by the critics! In my opinion it was a bold & wise decision of the government and the initial problems are temporary and every project used to have its 'teething problems' in the initial stage. Many of the problems we are coming across will certainly be removed at the earliest. Meanwhile, we should refrain from exaggerating the issues making them difficult to solve and creating unfounded panic about the new system. more
