If you are buying shoes above 15k or watches above 25k - you are in a much better position than your fellow countrymen.
You are not just the 1%, you are the 0.1% or perhaps even more elite.
80 crore people don’t have enough money to eat.
90% of Indians earn less than 25000 a month.
So if you can afford to spend that on a shoe or a watch - you should be paying more taxes.
You should not curse the government but understand it is your bad luck that you were born in such a poor country.
You should understand that it is your lack of talent or initiative that you were not able to leave the country.
The government is not doing anything wrong.
Higher consumption taxes on luxury items is the only possible way to tax the rich. more

Levy more and more taxes on individuals and give attractive tax breaks to corporates so much so that personal income tax exceeds corporate income tax collections (reality). Such a great achievement by this "nationalist" govt. And the govt is lucky to have dedicated followers who want to increase taxation even further and take us back to Indira's times.. Why do people forget that it was liberalization that resulted in India becoming one of the world's largest economies, lifting millions of people to a higher income level, and not tax goondagiri (communism).. If you keep taxing people at every turn, you won't have many "creamy layer" people left to tax and it will encourage black money generation in the economy. more

In my opinion, there is nothing wrong if the luxuries are taxed. People spend as per their purchasing power. So no one is burdened. I fully agree with Mr. Ramesh Vishwanath that there is lot of corruption in our country. If it goes completely, we are again a Golden Sparrow. Taxation is backbone of of every country. Even Europeans countries charge direct and indirect taxes. There is a country where the personal tax rate is 55%. That way we are lucky. Perhaps there is nonneed to say that, it is our taxation money that is allowing our development in every field apart from purchase of defence equipment, roads, healthcare and social security including law and order. Let us be assured that our country is progressing with a very good speed. Let us contribute to it by paying due taxes and maintain a good hygiene at all levels. more

It is very well to tax the rich. If you can afford it, you will buy it, but as Mr. Mohinudeen suggests that it may the industry and that is bad. Secondly, all this money collected will go for the Ladki behan ki scheme where crores are paid to women and girls who now will no longer work but sit at home and watch TV while our money goes out to them. Local Circles should inform the government that this scheme should be paid for by the ruling party's members, ministers and subordinates and not from the amount collected from public money. Lets see how it goes down then. more
