Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery

This latest survey of LC is good as it helps consumers in not getting cheated or misled

However there is a bigger problem and that is evasion of tax by jewellers. They try to still do business without tax receipt and paying GST and many customers fall for it.

Later if there is any issue be it gold purity or whatever there is no place to even file a complaint more

Things can improve only if the public changes their mentality. Still a large number of people say 'why pay taxes' and want every thing free. Unfortunately some Governments are doing it. more
the Buyers are also equally responsible in this non- compliance, as much as the Gold Jewelers , because they do not insist on valid receipt to save the tax. If they insist, the Jeweler cant evade the tax. more
Consumers who buy such high value items must exercise due care. They should buy from reputed sellers and keep their transactions above board. Insist on complete information, certificates and all other paperwork including bills. If people do this, they will not be sorry. Hallmark is like the BIS standard. It assures quality but could make the jewellery item a bit expensive. People should not be penny-wise pound foolish when buying things like jewellery. There are smaller jewellers also who maintain standrd and reputation. They have been around for decades/generations. The unknown and the fly by night operators are the ones to worry about as they will cut corners. more
Thanks for raising this issue. I urge my fellow citizens to make sure that all payments be made with cheques and/or digital means so that there is a trail of proofs. Also, this can help the consumers in case of frauds (impurity in precious metal, weighing malpractices, etc). On the other hand, the government can collect the taxes through due processes. Please help the country by paying the due taxes. more
Gold merchants must not be allowed to sell gold ornaments without hlalmark embossed on each item. Bring shutters down if any not follow. more
