Hike in Railfare

14.2% hike is not acceptable. Rising input costs, not revised by previous govt etc cannot be cited as justification. A 2% hike per year will be smooth on people and help manage rising cost. But what about internal efficiencies - reduction of manpower, saving on expenses, resource utilisation, energy saving, prevention of accidents and losses?
People cannot pay for inefficiencies. more

Why can't we run more trains? The booking for train is over within minutes once it is open.where is the bottle neck? Why should we stand in a queue for hours to get a ticket. The tickets for the short journeys with out booking can be issued by ticket vendors using a simple machine used by the bus conductors .They can charge a percentage commission for the service. The land of the railways near the stations can be used for building lodges on BOT arrangement.Once the train finishes its journey the boggie should be cleaned.Open toilets in the train is a disgrace .If we cannot change it why can't we put a lid which can be closed at least when the train is passing through a station more
2% per year would be 20% hike for last 10 years. so 14% is much better than 20% . It is needed for both to wipe out huge debts made by earlier government also for future developments like bullet Trains High speed trains etc. more
I agree with Mr Sriram. Even the various quotas seats allocated in trains which are misused should be relooked. more
It is high time our moderators start SIMULTANEOUSLY a string on 'Agriculture and Irrigation', another on 'Infrastructure development' and still another on 'Inter-linking & improvement of Rivers, including Ganga Cleaning', as these are very important for INDIA'S DEVELOPMENT and are pet projects of the present government too. The members can post their views simultaneously on these topics. more
The Railways must be improved to a great extent, in terms of profitability, safety and even punctuality. If we as citizens have to pay a little bit more for these improvements we have to bear it. I suggest that all the different sectors of the Railways must be made into separate companies, responsible for their own profitability and funding; for example Southern Railway, Western Railway etc must be made into separate companies, doing business in proper coordination with other companies. There are so many unproductive people in the Railway department who eat away most of the resources that could otherwise be utilised elsewhere. On top of it is the corruption and looting in the department; any body who had dealt with the freight department of any big station like chennai will know this. The unproductive people must be relieved or used productively and the corruption should be dealt with firmly. more
