I was told that at Rameswaram Sasthrigal demand exorbitant Sambhavanai for doing simple ritual like Hiranya Srardham ; when one of my relative wanted to do this ritual at Rameswaram, Sasthrigal Demanded Rs 8500/-
Even in Chennai Sasthrigal demand exorbitant Sambhavanai for doing Hiranya Srardham.
We go to Raghavendra Mutt at T Nagar for doing this ritual , and they charge very nominal Sambhavanai only.
Will any Brahmin Association look into this ?

Though we do wish to perform this Shraadham ritual in respect to our forefathers the present day Greedy Sasthrigals make it financially prohibitive. For the last ten years I have been performing my parents thithis at Madhya Kailash Chennai. Thanks for the information shall check up with Raghavendra Mutt. more

If Rs.8,500/- is exorbitant, then question is " what is Reasonable ? " Unfortunately, the SastrigaLism has become by necessity a profession; In today's cost of living, if we expect a sastrigal to accept whatever mite is given as Dakshinai, we are fooling ourselves. Also, it is not an organized profession, with some structured rates reasonably fixed and followed. By the nobility of the so called profession of serving as a Brahmin, in general it is still perceived as a respectable one, giving him the pedestal of a family Guru. That 's how it should continue so that the forthcoming generations have the inclination to continue and uphold our age old tradition. But then there are always two sides. "Yathaa Sakthi" without any demand, if he agrees, what are we prepared to give ? Some one eligible -- read AcharyaaLs for eg., -- should give it a well balanced proposal as a neutral opinion as the minimum in today's circumstances, and the performers should then give anything above the minimum, "Yathaa Sakthi " but with full heart. I have heard from my wife when once with her parents she went to Rameswaram temple and when they put Rs. 10/- in the Aarthi thattu, the Sastrigal pathetically said " we are two persons here; we have to share. If you give another 10, it will be a great help !" The family felt so sorry for them ( & paid another 10). But those days have gone, though not entirely. Things have improved and if they are demanding today for Hiranya Srardham Rs.8,500/- , then it shows there is demand.... meaning people who are willing to pay... Same time if SastrigaLs have started feeling "take it or leave it" then people will simply light a Karpooram , worship and go and the professionals have to go back to Rs 10 one day. It is a question of not only how big our purse should be; but also how big our heart be ! more

I do agree with your comments, but all devotees are not capable of paying Rs.8500/- being it is not a small amount.
In our Society we have lot of variations in our earnings.
Simple example I would like to share with you.
In a Jr. Govt College Lecturer who holds relevant degree and 5 Years of Experience and the Same relevant degree and 5 Years of Experience in Pvt/Corporate College Lecturer is not the same.
It is our responsibility is to take care of our Culture and Rituals specially PINDA DAAN.

In chennai, sastrigal(Yajurveda) will be charged for Hiranya Srardham,2 brahmanas for bhojan- 6K and you have to pay for cooking food based on your menu. and Sastrigal(Rugveda/ else) they will charge - 5K excluding cooking food. This is completely depends up on your choosing about sastrigal and way of doing. As per sastra, if you make happy of brahmanas on that day of Hiranyam, your mathru / pithrus are very happy. We spent a lot money for unneccessary things like movies, chats, etc. why don't you spend little part for your mathru / pithrus. Think your self !.. If we do our best, our next generation is happy... Have a good Day I want to give answer to your doubt about hiranya srardham. first i give you one example thats you want to take idly as breakfast in amma Food centre. It is one rupee only. when it is star hotel Rupees (Hundred +GST) But idly cost only one rupee. variations depending upon which type of presentation to the customer If you want Minimum economical srardham. Dont fear about this. Take one parcel of meals from any type of arya bhavan give the food to above 72 Aged poor person.
