Hot pack vs Cold pack

My mother in law has sprained her shoulder yesterday. Pls advise what to use cold pack or hot pack or both and what frequency? more

Use cold pack for 10 minutes & 3 times in a day till pain in hand movement & swelling decreased. After 3- 4 days of cold pack no pain in hand movements but little soreness might be there for that you can use hot packs. But wrap up with small towel either cold or hot pack because sometimes this hurt skin. more
Cold pack for immediately past or recent injury and hot pack for old injury/pain. more
Immediate releif is with Pain killers. But for longer releif take Arnica 200, 4 pilules x 2 daily on empty stomach under a tongue for 6 weeks. As for cold pack, it is fine when sitting, whilst lying down and at night use hot pack. When up you need shoulder support, tie the wrist to the neck via a sling. when it is less painful move the shoulder to prevent stiffness.Yoga centre ( non commercial is worth visitng for a week like in Gohana or Palampur where Physios are also available if needed.Commercial Physios and Yoga centres to be avoided. We travelled from Dehra Dun to Palampur in H.P. for similar problem, accomodation was only 1,000 per 24 hrs with 3 meals and cleaner bed than in Hotels and constant hot water.. more
She should use cold packs 3-4times& give rest to the arm.She should also do supported overhead movements in the painfree range to avoid stiffness at shoulder joint later. more
If its a sprain apply cold pack for the first 72 hours. 3-4 times a day more
