HOUSE DUST MITE , CLUTTER, GARBAGE :

This is a post related to Swachh post requesting suggestions:
Any close friend or relative when visits home makes a beeline to the Kitchen either to get the aroma of the food that you will be offering or see the kitchen.
No uncleaned vessels should be kept in the kitchen . The maid may wash major vessels , but the smaller one as and when needs to be rinsed should be done . No food materials should be kept open . They should be closed or kept in Fridge. So the kitchen doesn’t attract insects ,flies and pests. Keep pesticides for cockroaches and ants handy . Make it a point to take out the vessels from the kitchen clean the vessels shelves in the night spray pesticide yourself and close the doors till morning , once a month . When ever you visit the kitchen at night hours for water, if you see pests demolish them with handy pesticide spray.
Organic :Vegetable & fruit peals [cut into smaller pieces for quick disintegration ], coffee powder & tea leaves, coconut fiber, Egg shells [also to be crushed ] to be collected in a small container for 3 days if a small family . and empty into a bigger one . A layer of mud / sand to separate each layer of organic stuff. Just the 2 of us we have manage a bucket and half full with the mud. The first batch which is 3 months old is being used just now.
Our plan is to expand slowly a small herbal garden and some greens.
Plastic : All plastic are collected in a separate pouch and is put into dust bin as there is no system of segregated collection . At least the rag picker picks what he wants , the plastic kept in a separate plastic container & doesn’t have to mess up .
Recyclable : We collect separately and dispose of to the paper wala’ s & get paid for it.
Clutter :a collection of things lying about in an untidy state. Every room in the house has the capacity and temptation to gather as we don’t have the decision making ability to dispose . This is how I manage to keep my home clutter free :

* Hall : This room gives the first impression to any one who walks into the house. Take special care .
Warning : a place where newspaper , magazines, mails, advertisement materials are strewn around. Keep in a in a small table or stool.

If you get visitors and like to display the reading materials for the their benefit till you come , keep a
Tea poy with shelves under

or a small glass top table with a couple of shelves down to stack the reading materials. The top glass top should be free from any stuff except when serving tea. And snacks.

* Office table : may it be home or office , keep just the “to do list “or the diary on the table. Too many papers and files don’t certify one as a busy man. It only indicates how confused and clumsy the person is. Mostly these persons will be swallowing lots of medicines for blood pressure and insomnia.

Whatever files taken to refer or work on should go back to the shelf in the place meant for the file as soon as the matter is looked into. Sometime 2 or 3 files may be needed , refer and get them back . Don’t crowd the working table with lots of files and papers. All of them should be glanced through and noted in the “to do list” or diary. Don’t ever think that you will impress others when you sink or hide your face behind files. People will call you a procrastinator.

* Dining room : This is combined with hall in many homes , so that large number people can get together on occasions etc. Tables should have nothing except the table cloth and a vase of flowers if desired and a Jug of water and a just 2 glasses, may be some containers with pickles .Cutlery and crockery to be put in just before meals . Nothing else on the dining table.

*The Bed room : When you enter the bedroom it should be in ready to hit the sack , lie down immediately. May be even the Bed readers keep the bed ready to lie down first. Before switching off lights make sure that the reading materials are not on the bed or on the floor. Keep a small stool to place them and push it under the cot.
The bed can be ready to hit the sack only when you get up in the morning or any time from the bed set the bed right first. Dust the sheets , fold them and keep them as well as the pillows in the right place . No books or reading materials to be left on the bed while asleep or otherwise.

* Bathroom : Now let us come to the unofficial Library ; we do have people who utilize the time in the toilet to read or go through the plan for the day .Absolutely nothing wrong at all. But as long as you take back the reading material after your sojourn . Or create a small shelf to stack some material away from the spray of water.

# Newspaper magazines are disposed periodically once in 2 months.
# Entire house and the fittings are cleaned once in 6 months. Along with that pest control [we do it ourselves , we know what are the pests and the quantity required ]taken care.
# Every 10 days bed linen are put to wash & every 2 months the mattress, pillows are put under the chennai sun .
# Once in 5 years house is white washed painted.
# Pest control done in the flat complex once in 3 years. more

Kudos to Shri.Jayakumar Daniel ji for such an elaborate but useful sharing of ideas on Swatch House-keeping. It is obvious that from a Tour Operator you have now graduated to be "Swatch Bharat" champion! Excellent ideas and one would love to start implementing them at one own dwelling place. Thanks a lot. more
