How Safe are our Toys?
We have BIS standards relating to safety of toys but unless a safety certification for toys is made mandatory, such standards are futile. In a mystery shopping-testing survey by QCI, 70% of imported toys failed the quality test!
The good news is that BIS certification for toys will be mandatory from January 1, 2021. This will include all toys, whether manufactured in India or imported.
Consumer survey reveals that though 69% of the respondents consider safety as very important quality, only 27% always read the safety manual that comes with certain toys. Also, over 60% of the respondents faced safety issues with toys ( physical threat, electric shocks and/or chemical danger) but only 3% approached the consumer forum.

Yes, safety of toys was an old debated issue. Such issue was raised in many forums in early 2000 but failed to score deeply. Indian Toy industries are at low ebb now. Govt. of India made a good attempt to give facelift to toy industries in early 2000 but local players were not much inclined to make any quality assessment & compliance despite facility was created in laboratories in Metro cities. That could place the industry in a suitable position. No doubt, world market is dominated few Asian countries and India finds no place in it. it's important now to take measures on safety issue in all aspects and compliance should be made mandatory that will eradicate the actual ailments. more

We should not be complacent on this issue. The standards would not suffice, the certification should compulsorily follow. As toy industry is looking for revival, we must integrate this certification process implementation along with. more

It has taken 73 years post-independence to realise how important the safety of toys is. Better late than never. The next hurdle is its strict implementation. Thanks for this good information, because when my grand- daughters came from the US last year, they were critical of the safety aspects of toys made in India. more
