How Safe is Genetically Modified Food?
The scientific committee of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has green-signalled labelling of GM food items for manufacture, sale and distribution in India with a threshold value of one per cent. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has decided to go ahead with this recommendation.
As per Consumer Survey carried out as part of the study ‘Genetically Modified Food and Consumers’:
• 46% of the respondents agreed that the GM food must be labelled properly but such labels have not yet been seen by them.
• 47% were unwilling to consume food that is genetically modified.
• 41% rate GM food as ‘risky’ and do want to consume it even if it is more nutritious.
