How Safe is Genetically Modified Food?
The central government had made it mandatory to label all genetically modified foods sold in a packaged form from January 1, 2013.
The scientific committee of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has green-signalled labelling of GM food items for manufacture, sale and distribution in India with a threshold value of one per cent. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has decided to go ahead with this recommendation.
As per Consumer Survey carried out as part of the study ‘Genetically Modified Food and Consumers’:
• 46% of the respondents agreed that the GM food must be labelled properly but such labels have not yet been seen by them.
• 47% were unwilling to consume food that is genetically modified.
• 41% rate GM food as ‘risky’ and do want to consume it even if it is more nutritious.

GM Crops and the decisions surrounding it are complicated. We should give more time to scientiests as of now. more

On many occasions, it is observed that the central government is going by their convenience and not bothered about the benefit of the consumer. more

Scientifically illiterate people are always afraid of new things like GM Food. People like Swadeshi Jagaran Manch love opposing anything that is foreign. GM Brinjal can give 300% yield, green revolution in Guj was due to BT Cotton. Pls dont freighten people with baseless allegation about GM foods. more
