Immediate Attention : Landfills have become a environment and a health hazard for all

To Ministry of Urban Development,
In the season-2 of Satyamev Jayate Amir khan showed how Dr. S.R. Maley transformed a vast garbage dump in Gorai in suburban Mumbai into a beautiful park. It was done using eco-friendly methods in just 60 days and in a very cost effective way. Why can't Delhi and other cities follow the same and save people from various viruses and deadly diseases. Some of these were not even known to mankind which are now a result of poor and unorganised dumping. more

Third part : Workshop Format : These workshops are conducted at various places, schools, colleges, RWA's , corporates, societies etc Methodology: The format of the workshop is kept simple and practical. Purpose: To make them aware and sensitive about the growing problem of Environment and health hazards. Everyone faces problem because of garbage dumps around their place, so they understand. Also, explain how to segregate the waste at home. Things required to be carried : Composter, Dry leaves, Bag of mixed garbage, Ready Compost. After sharing the concerns, I show them how it is done, and also carry some composters/ pots for people to buy at no profit. The reason for carrying them, is once they take home the pot, the chances are that they will use it. Else, after going back home, the thought stays, however eventually out of sight becomes out of mind. So equipping them what is required to start helps them to start immediately. Hope, the inputs I have shared help. Would be happy to answer any other questions you all might have. Thanks for giving me an opportunity to share my experience. Best! Samidha more
Second part of the discussion, how to compost at home: Aerobic Composting at Home Step 1: Get a set of two earthen pots. Step 2: Layer it with some dry leaves and add 1 spoon of curd/ butter milk. This is to introduce good bacteria that help in the breakdown process. Step 3: Add your kitchen waste and layer it again with some dry leaves. Dry leaves will absorb extra wetness. This would also prevent from any foul smell or flies. Step 4: Keep repeating step 2, till the pot fills completely Step 5: Once the pot is completely filled, leave it in one corner for a month and begin using the 2nd pot. Step 6: After one month check he first pot. Most likely everything you added would have converted into a nice black soil like texture. Tips: If possible stir the compost once a week, if you want to speeding up the process. Even without stirring, you will get nice rich compost. You can sieve the compost and put back the stuff which has still requires to compost further. This is rich compost is very good for the plants and vegetables. more
So, as discussed, posting the first part of how I do it at home, and share the same through the workshops I conduct: My inspiration and motivation came from Aamir Khans show satyamev jayate, where he spoke about segregation of waste at source. At my house I have 5 segregation points. 1) Kitchen Waste - everything from vegetable peels, tea leaves, left overs, egg shells etc, 2) Newspapers - Newspapers, Misc Papers, cardboard boxes, pizza/cake boxes etc 3) Cans - All plastic, glass, tin cans 4) E- waste -- Batteries, Cartridges 5) Rejects - Anything that can not go in the above 4 Category 1 Kitchen waste - Source of 60% of total waste in the house. This goes into the compost bin that I have. Anyone can begin by purchasing a compost bin. If not available two earthen pots "Matka" with a covered mouth is also ideal. I started with earthen pot and gradually moved to a compost bin. They both serve the same purpose. Category 2 & 3 - Goes to our friendly neighbourhood radii wala Category 4) goes to the e- waste co. Category 5) which is about 5% goes to the guy who comes to pick garbage every day. Note: Even if category 1 is tackled at home, which is a wet waste and causes a lot of environmental threats, a lot of problems can be solved. Wet waste leaves a lot of water and when it is mixed with other waste produces a substance called leech. This seeps through soil and contaminate soil and water in and around that area. Not only that it produces greenhouse gases which are 21 more times harmful than CO2an co2. Also, if this wet waste gets mixed with dry waste, lot of dry waste which could have been recycled otherwise gets spoilt. Reference: http://www.satyamevjayate.in/dont-waste-your-garbage.aspx more
Well, if a pandemic (SARS, Dengue, Ebola, new virus) starts that can wipe out 50% of the city population. And virus usually does not discriminate based on college degrees or income level. I heard Ranveer Singh had to stop some film shooting and had to be hospitalized because of a little mosquito. Kya yaar, bade bade hero ka acting karta hai, aur ek machchhar nahin mar sakta? Mera naam pura mitti mein mila diya. more
Mr. Agarwal, it is indeed a pleasure, to do a small write up for a person who is himself so well aware. I should be able to share the same, by tomorrow with references and sources which were my source of inspiration. Rgds -- Samidha more
