Steps taken by Indian Railways to prevent fire accidents in trains:

1) Using fire retardant furnishing materials to mitigate effect of fire.

2) Fire extinguishers are being provided in all Air-conditioned coaches, Second class – cum – guard and luggage vans, Pantry cars and train locomotives.

3) Improved materials for electrical fittings and fixtures such as MCB, light fittings, terminal boards, connectors, etc., are being used progressively.

4) Detailed instructions are issued to zonal railways for observance of safe practices in handling of pantry cars and for ensuring periodical inspection of electrical and LPG fittings in the pantry cars.

5) Intensive publicity campaigns are being launched to prevent the travelling public from carrying inflammable goods along with them.

6) Fire fighting arrangements have also been made at railway stations by Indian Railways Each station is provided with two dry chemical powder type fire extinguishers. Fire buckets filled with dry sand and water are provided at all stations.

7) Front line staff such as Station Masters have been imparted regular training to operate fire extinguishers. Periodic drills on fire fighting are being conducted on regular basis. The telephone number of nearby fire brigades is kept available at Railway stations.

The Railways should also install fire sensors at various vulnerable points in coaches and also install instrument that will automatically become operative with the assistance of Fire detecting sensors. more
smoking and carrying inflamable items are still continue unabated in the trains....there is no check on this. Strict action against the voilaters are urgent requirement. Secondly, Indian Railway should start thinking for installing CCTV cameras in the trains. It may be instrumental in controlling lot of malfunctioning and also help in many ways for improving safety, security and cleanliness and other issues. This process i.e.installing cctv cameras should start not with VVIP trains like Shatabdi and Rajdhani but the most neglected ordinary trains. more
Smoke detectors should be installed in coaches. Smoking should be strictly prohibited in passenger coaches. This needs enforcement. Baggage screening may be tried to prevent carriage of explosive/ inflammable material by passengers. There should be some system so that the coaches which have been affected by fire can be easily detached from others through remote control. This will help prevent spread of fire to other coaches. more
safety is an attitude which rly employees often flout or are not much worried about. -prevent unauthorized entry in reserved coach( is it possible at all with hardly any general coaches?) -regular preventive maintenance of all civil, mechanical and electrical operations (poorly done due to resource crunch and many other factors) -with almost a train every 10-15 min in busy corridors 9eg- MGS_NDLS) how will it be done without technological upgradation? -railways may try to induct reputed pvt parties to do the preventive maintenance of coaches. more
The fire in the trains are caused could be because of the following. 1. Short Circuit and voltage flactuation - This can prevented using a. High quality electric wires. preventing them exposed to the atmosphere . b. Circuit Breakers. Each compartment has to be provided with circuit breakers . At the same time emergency lamps are to be provided in the compartment. c. Prevent smoking and Prevent using General stoves for cooking e.Pantry has to be always after the Engine and should be always disconnection with the other compartment. During Distribution of the food only to be connected and Sufficient fire extinguishers are to be provided with every compartment f. Fire fighting team means the staff can be trained on fire fighting more
