Improving Food Safety: Addl Inputs on Solutions

Below are some of the key recommendations from different circles in regards to improving food safety in India. We request you to share your inputs on what other actions must be taken to achieve the same. With FSSAI engaging with the citizenry, this presents a unique opportunity for the Government and Citizens to work together towards improving Food safety.

Improving Food Safety in India

1. Food Testing labs should be set up and upgraded in all states, as per international standards
2. A committee should be established to make a crackdown on food inspectors who take bribes
3. Government food safety evaluation techniques, processes and controls should be modified
4. Steps should be taken to regularize street food vendors and issues licenses to them
5. Directives should be issued on the cleanliness required in the kitchen spaces of restaurants
6. Food inspectors should make surprise visits to food joints and restaurants to ascertain the level of hygiene and to check for adulteration
7. Violators should be heavily penalized
8. Repeat offenders’ license should be revoked
9. Injecting chemicals into fruits and vegetables should be made illegal
10. Chemical farming should be strictly banned
11. Proper systems and processes should be devised for the food safety bodies
12. District wise checking of hotels and restaurant kitchens must be done on a regular basis
13. Anytime issues are found in a batch of product, recalls should be mandated and same needs to be communicated to public via all media including social media
14. Organic labeling along the lines of (USDA organic) must be introduced
15. A citizen circle should be opened in all major states and cities with mandatory participation by food inspectors across the country so they can get leads from citizens and take actions. A consumer help line for reporting unsafe, adulterated or unethical practices around food by food brands should also be started
16. Organic farming should be promoted
17. The expiry date should be engraved on the product packaging so that it cannot be changed
18. The expired items must be compulsorily taken back by the producer
19. Private food testing labs should be opened in cities and citizens should be allowed to get food samples. more

The designated officers, of FSSAI in each district, should convene MONTHLY meetings to discuss consumer complaints more  
THERE SHOULD BE COMMITTEE'S AT CITY & CORPORATION ZONE LEVEL FOR better implementation. like in Pune city only FASSI can not handle entire city more

As some one pointed out that displaying certificate is not solution. But it will help to have data base who is selling what and where. when their credentials are with authorities they will be cautious everyday. That be helpful to some extent. more  
An unbiased implementation of the suggested plan with peoples participation will help transform the nation to a very high level of food safety comparable to the best of the world. more
